Enquire nowThe Peloponnese region
The Mani region of the Peloponnese in which we are to be found is a vast land mass, technically an island, separated from the Greek mainland by the Corinth canal and ( along with ancient Corinth ) is a key landmark if driving from Athens.
Being the most Southerly part of mainland Europe it enjoys a fabulous warm climate whilst remaining lush green as the surrounding meadows and olive groves are fed throughout the winter and spring by streams running off the towering Taygetos mountains, often still capped by snow even in early summer, that are the backdrop to our village .
The area is amongst the richest in ancient myths and archaeological sites including ancient Olympia, site of the original Olympic games and because of it's remoteness throughout history the area has retained its natural charm without the impact of tourism that has affected so many other once beautiful places.
The dramatic coastline is filled with little coves and beaches, lazy fishing villages and tavernas serving the freshest great value food and wines. This area is often referred to as the" real Greece" or "forgotten Greece" and we are really happy for it to stay that way .
The Lefktron / Stoupa area
Spend lazy days around the cottage, walking the paths and old donkey tracks amongst the olive groves, head into the mountains and their villages untouched by time or head down the hill and in just a few minutes you can be exploring the coastal villages of :
* Kardamili with its vibrant bars, coffee houses, tavernas and fabulous seaside setting- our favourite beach is here and has olive groves and a brilliant taverna to provide a lazy lunch time break from the sea and sun.
* Stoupa with 2 fabulous safe sandy beaches backed by places to eat drink and relax or just watch the world go by and all in the setting that was the inspiration for "Zorba the Greek"
* Agios Nicolaos, simply the most lovely unspoilt fishing village unchanged for decades but with free internet cafe's to keep in touch with things.

Pyrgos is just a 35km drive by hire car skirting the Taygetos mountains through vast olive groves and quaint villages before dropping down to Kardamili and taking in the breathtaking views and sparkling azure blue of the Aegean Sea.
Alternatively do as we do and take a scheduled easyjet, Olympic or BA flight direct to Athens new and out of town international airport and then take a leisurely and quite straightforward drive through breathtaking scenery via Kalamata or ancient Sparti. We were delighted with our stay at Lemon and Lime Cottage and would recommend it to anyone. We are a family of 6 and stayed at the cottage for a week in early September 2012. The village of Pyrgos is very quaint – the roads are so tiny that you must park at the back entrance and make your way to the cottage – it's only a 5 minute walk so not too much of an inconvenience and adds a certain charm to it all. The cottage is unique in its layout, very beautifully decorated, comfortable with air con/fans in every room and contains all the bits and bobs you need for a comfortable stay. Our favourite spot was the solarium – the view is absolutely amazing. We watched sunsets every evening which were breath-taking. Keith and Theresa leave very good recommendations on places to eat as well as names of neighbours so you feel part of the village. The instructions on how to reach the cottage are also very clear. Stoupa has some lovely beaches – our favourite was Stoupa Beach itself, sandy and calm (perfect for children) with some nice fish if you fancy a little snorkelling. There is a friendly man who runs a little boat business where you can hire motor boats, pedallos and kayaks by the hour. There's also plenty of ameneties nearby and nice showers for rinsing off before going for a meal. We recommend the fabulous Dolcini's bakery for those with a sweet tooth! We also enjoyed eating at Halikounas – friendly owners and the chef makes a wonderful coca-cola cake (sounds strange but is really lovely!) |

We had a fantastic time at Lemon and Lime cottage during June. We were really surprised at how comfortable the house is - it has absolutely everything you could need. We particularly loved having the spa pool to relax in at night time with the lights on. The view from the terrace is amazing as you can see for miles around both down to the sea and up to the mountains, and it was amazing how many stars you can see at night time. The area around Stoupa is really lovely and there are loads of great tavernas and bars. The whole holiday was totally relaxing and we are definitely going to come back this summer. |

When you arrive in the tiny village of Pyrgos you are so far removed from the distractions of modern life (there are no shops here and very limited access by car into the village) that you will wind down completely and do exactly what you should be doing on holiday, simply relax. We stayed at the Lemon & Lime cottage for 3 weeks this summer with our 5 children (between 12 and 2 years). We enjoyed ourselves at the cottage though would agree with the owners, Keith and Teresa Whyte, that the cottage is not suitable for young children - the steep drops are very hazardous. We persuaded Keith and Teresa to let the cottage to us despite their warnings because we fell in love with the pictures of it. Since we have older children to look out for the little ones, the cottage, despite it's dangers was fine for us. We would not however recommend it to families where more than one child is under the age of 5-6. One should be aware that the pool is very small and shallow with inbuilt stone benches. The nearby (6 minutes by car) sandy beach of Kalogria is fantastic, especially for younger children since it is very shallow at the shore.Should you come in August, hang around or return to the beach until late afternoon, the atmosphere is wonderful - lots of people, mainly Greeks playing beachball and volleyball. From the cottage in Pyrgos it's an hour's car ride to the caves of Diros, 2hrs to Mystras, 1.5 hours to Monevassia and 3hrs to Olympia. All in all the cottage deserves a positive review, being pretty and well equiped. |
