"perfectly positioned and appointed"
We were reluctant to provide a review of Old Shire Stables, one of two converted farm buildings we stay in at Troutsdale Farm, because it's so lovely we don't want lots of other folk staying there when we want to. The long tree- lined drive up to the property, past the farmhouse, and through the unprepossessing farm yard doesn't prepare you for the wonderful views that open up once inside. The attention to detail in this beautifully restored old farm building has to be seen to be appreciated. Recently renovated and fitted out as far as possible with materials sourced solely from the UK - from the butler's sink to the heavy linen blinds. The owners and their daughter have ensured that the build is as environmentally friendly as possible - ground source heart pump, rainwater recapture and eco-friendly paint.
If all those sounds a little bit too earnest, it's not. The three double bedrooms are generously proportioned, the bathrooms immaculate and the large kitchen equipped with all the usual modern appliances. A homemade Victoria sponge, a pretty jug full of freshly picked lilac and the log burner already roaring away, welcomed us on our arrival. The view from the living room across to the Roaches is stunning. There is a lot of great walking and cycling in the area. So much more we could say, none of it negative, but we are only daring to review it because we would hate to deprive the house's friendly and hard-working owners of potential much deserved business.
