The Puglia/Molise region
“Boot of the heel” is called the southern peninsula of Apulia in Italy. In the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, the region is a melting pot of cultures of the Mediterranean area. The olive trees, the stunning coastline with its sparkly waters, the Baroque architecture and the peaceful lifestyle are just some of the precious experience that can turn a tourist into a traveler. Almost every village in Apulia boasts a cathedral dating back over the centuries. There are some beautiful examples of Romanesque architecture decorated with detailed Oriental carvings. The town of Otranto is few kilometres away from Lecce., on the Adriatic coast It is known for being conquered, in 1480, by the Moors that killed 800 christians. The Holy remainings of the Martyrs are still conserved inside the Cathedral that is also known for the beautiful mosaic that covers the floors and that represents the Tree of Life. Driving southwards to Santa Maria di Leuca you will find on of the most charming coasts of the region. Gallipoli, on the Jonian coast is known for its fish market and its attractive city centre. Alberobello with its "trulli "and all the beautiful area called "Valle d'Itria", waits you at approximately one hour driving distance from Lecce.

Lecce is the capital city of the Salento region. The city is characterized in its architecture by a strong Baroque imprinting that can be appreciated in the facades of the churches and palaces in the historical centre. Experience the movida that every night gives a special life to the city centre or taste the local cooking with its wines at one of the several cafés and restaurants inside the city centre. Be enchanted by the hand-made "papier maché" or by the people playing the local dance called "Pizzica". Lecce is conveniently located in the centre of the peninsula, just four miles away from the coast. The city can be reached by train from the major Italian towns.
