About this location
The Puglia region
Puglia is in the heel of Italy. Decked in olive groves which can make it seem more like Greece than Italy, it is also the country's most fertile region which makes for fabulous wining and dining on local products. The Primitivo and Negroamaro reds are particularly excellent. The climate is hot throughout the Summer and one can enjoy blazing sunshine at almost any time of year, though outside the main Summer period that cannot be guaranteed.
The people are warm, friendly and open, their varied physiognomies a reflection of the many invaders that have been through the region and left their mark on it, most notably in the fantastic local music, the pizzica-pizzica, in which one hears influence of Arab, Greek and Spanish culture. The south of Puglia is dominated by the stunning baroque town of Lecce with its intricately carved church facades. Oria itself is a medieval gem with an annual tournament and parade that celebrates the period.
The masseria is situated in Oria, an amazing unspoiled and largely undiscovered (by Brits) gem of a town. Oria is steeped in the most colorful history and was home to one of the oldest Jewish settlements in Europe. There are Jewish relics and monuments all over the town dating back to 5th century. It is also home to a magnificent 13th century Frederic II castle which has recently been beautifully restored, and the breathtaking cathedral with its stunning Duomo.
Beneath the cathedral is a crypt housing unique mummified remains of priests standing in their cloisters, dating between c16 - c19. The town itself is all cobbled streets and stunning stone buildings with lots of gorgeous gelaterias, cafes and restaurants. It is a real living Italian town full of the nicest people anywhere. It is well located for both Adriatic and Ionian coasts (Torre Guaceto blue flag beach and Campomarina - which are 2 of the loveliest beaches in the whole of Italy, both around a 30 minute drive).
