The Brittany / Cotes-D'Armor region

The delights of the French way of life can be summed up in one word, Brittany. Brittany offers eight hundred miles of grand rocky coastline with scores of bays and little fishing villages. The enchanting countryside is dotted with giant granite boulders and wild meadows on the moors, thickets and forests in a gently rolling landscape.
It is the buildings that give a region its soul, and in Brittany, you can find it in the megaliths, calvaries, castles, manor houses, countless chapels and old villages. All of them bear witness to Brittany's eventful history and wealth of traditions. Brittany was, after all, home to the enchanted Forest, was where Merlin lived, and where corsairs sailed to the new world. The people from Quebec retrace their roots here, and Great Britain owes the "great" in its name to distinguish it from this unique region of France.
It is in western Brittany that Breton culture remains most evident. In Quimper, and in the Pays Bigouden, crèpes, cider, traditional costumes and Celtic music are still a genuine part of the Breton lifestyle. Vannes, Dinan and Rennes, the Breton capital, have well preserved medieval quarters where half-timbered buildings cover markets, shops, crèperies and restaurants.
The ancient ramparts and cobbled streets in the river port of Dinan are well worth a visit, and fans of Breton music head for St Brieuc in September for the music festival. Dinan sits on the river Rance with the houses of the old town clustered together behind the ramparts. St Brieuc stages the popular Breton rock festival in summer with a host of internationally renowned artists.
The walled port of St-Malo on the Côte d'Emeraude recalls the region's maritime expertise, while the remarkably intact castles at Fougères and Vitré are still a reminder of the mighty border-fortresses that protected Brittany's eastern frontier before its final union with France in 1532.
Holidaymakers are enticed to Brittany by its magnificent array of seafood such as shellfish, oysters, scallops and many tasty varieties of fish. Brittany is also famous for its farm produce such as salt meadow lamb, poultry and pork meat products.
Other specialties of the region are wafer biscuits and butter cookies. However, Brittany's proudest addition to the great cuisines of the world has to be the crêpe and its savoury equivalent the galette – these can be found all over in any of the typical Breton "crêperies" along the roadside or in the centres of old towns where visitors are often welcomed with a traditional cup of cider.
A long, rugged coastline, vast bays of glorious beaches, and a secretive, almost mystical interior is the lasting impression of Brittany. This most westward region of France, where the Bretons speak their ancient language and carry on age-old traditions, always seems a little out of step with mainstream France, but the many attractions welcome visitors in their thousands year after year.
The Le Quillio area
The Manior is ideally placed for holidays in Brittany offering easy access to both north and south coasts.
The north Brittany coast close to St Brieuc is about 30 minutes by car where there are not just lovely sandy beaches but also fascinating rock pools for children to try their hand at crabbing! Or visit the west Brittany coast for surfing, and the south Brittany coast for glorious sandy beaches, both about an hour from our Manoir.
The Manoir is located within a 5 mins drive from the nearest town of Uzel (6km) or 10 mins drive from Mur-de-Bretagne (11km) which has all the necessary amenities including banks, supermarkets, restaurants and shops and about 15-20 mins drive from the medieval tourist towns of Pontivy and Loudeac.
Pontivy is a large town with a beautiful chateau and old town quarter. Formerly named Napoleonville after his design of the new town, it has a beautiful setting on the Nantes-Brest canal and has everything you could possibly need for a days excursion. There are some lovely restaurants and very nice shops!
The Manior is only 14 kms from Lac de Guerledan where you can enjoy various water sports such as water ski-ing and swimming, or hire a motor boat, canoe, kayak, rowing boat, dinghy or pedalo, or enjoy a lake cruise, or take dinner one evening during the summer months on a floating restaurant. There are also some great places to eat and drink onshore and three small beaches which offer safe bathing for children.
The local area is ideal for bike riding with many small quiet country lanes to explore. Cycle along the tow path of the Nantes/ Brest canal or from Carhaix to Loudeac passing by Lac Guerlédan you can now cycle along the 111 kilometre long consolidated sand trail following the tracks of the old railway line.If you want to leave the track there are 24 round trips which vary in length from 4 ½ to 16 ½ km.
There are plenty of golf courses for the keen golfer. Golf de Rimaison at Pontivy is a 9 hole par 70. It has a good club house with refreshments available. The Ajoncs Dor is about 40 minutes drive away and is a 9 hole flat course, also there is a bueatiful course overlooking the sea at Val Andre.
Equestrian Activities - There are a number of ‘poney clubs’ in the area where you can hire a hack by the hour, around 15 euros, or for the day at about 75 euros, or you could have lessons and learn to ride. There is Guerlédan Riding school near the lake and there is a horse museum in nearby Corlay.
Fishing - There are numerous fishing lakes close to our Manoir including those in St Gilles Vieux Marché, St Guen and Lac Guerledan. Fishing permits for public waters can be obtained from local newsagents (tabac) or bars and a fishing licence covers all local areas and cost around 10 euros per day / 30 euros for 2 week
Markets - The nearest is at Mur de Bretagne on a Friday evening with the main part in the square but also dotted along the side streets. Traditional Breton dancing and lots of different general stalls, food, plants clothes etc and also live chickens/turkeys and ducks.

• Tuesday Rostrenen, Bourbriac & Quintin
• Wednesday Callac & Saint Brieuc ( near the cathedral )
• Thursday Huelgoat
• Friday Guingamp & Mur de Bretagne
• Saturday Loudeac, Josselin, Morlaix, Carhaix, Saint Brieuc (near the cathedral)

L'Abbaye de Bon Repos - The abbey was originally built in 1184 and has been successively ruined and rebuilt over the centuries. Its superb setting next to the River Blavet and the Nantes-Brest Canal is well worth a visit: there are weirs, salmon stairs, a former water mill, a mediaeval stone bridge over the river, a restaurant and a very interesting fossil/jewelley/objets d'art shop. Opposite there is a creperie/bar where you can sit and drink while watching the world go by. On Sunday mornings from Easter to October there is an interesting local market where traders sell organic produce and crafts - it’s not just for tourists, it's also popular with locals in Brittany . Not be missed if you are coming on holiday in early August is ‘Le Son et Lumiere’ held at the L’Abbaye de Bon Repos.Visit their web site for more information.
Forges Des Salle - This hamlet is tucked away at the bottom of a wooded valley and was the site of the iron/steel industry in the 18th and 19th Century. Visit the former homes of the workers which are furnished according to their original style. At the top of the terraced pleasure gardens there is a splendid view over the valley and the various stretches of water within it.
Zoos and animal Parks:
La Bourbansais Chateau- Zoo and park between Rennes and Saint Malo. Visit the listed château which house the furniture and treasures of Count of Lorgeril’s ancestors. Prehistoric park - 20 hectares of wild woodland with 5 lakes ancient wells, slate quarries dotted with scenes of dinosaurs and the evolution of man.
Poul Fetan - Living museum set in an old Breton village portraying life in the middle of the 19th Century near Quistinic in Morbihan
Brittany's climate is very mild, winter temperatures seldom fall below freezing and snow is a rarity mainly due to the Gulf stream. Spring and summer are normally warm and sunny making Brittany the ideal holiday destination all year round. It has a warm temperate climate. It does rain sometimes, which is one of the reasons its countryside is so green and wooded, but it would be an unusual week if there was not more sun that cloud. It can get pretty hot in the summer months, up to about 35 degrees.
Unlike say the South Of France, summers are rarely scorching making Brittany the ideal place for activities such as cycling, walking and of course watersports.

Spent a week here in Oct 2011 with 10 other members of our family (ranging from 5 year-old to 65 and our group arrived from Scotland, Wales England and France) and it was a terrific place to bond. You will need a car or be a keen cyclist to get around if you want to visit surrounding sights or shops, because this is an idyllic country setting. To be honest we rarely ventured out except for groceries as there is a swimming pool, table tennis, snooker table, large grassy play area for football & rounders, and selection of bikes (with a tandem!) so we didn't need to venture out - the additional beauty too is that all of the games and facilities were exclusive to our party. A lovely big dinning room too which allowed all 11 of us around the one table and a cosy living area for the wet or colder nights. Bedrooms were all clean and comfortable too, they've thought of practically everything. Much fun and wine was had by all of us and we didn't want to leave - this was the ultimate self-catering family holiday as far as we were concerned. |

I almost don't want to tell you how great this place is as I would love to keep this hidden gem all to myself but that would be a great disservice to the hard working owners, Chris and Sue. They have beautifully restored and decorated this property to a high standard. It has every amenity you could ever want including travel cots, baby monitors, bottle sterilizers, wifi, ipod docking station, children's toys, games and dvds, fully equipped kitchen, garden with heated pool, trampoline, climbing frame etc....We stayed in September and the weather was gorgeous, hot and sunny, but I feel this would be a great property all year round. We were a group of 6 adults and 3 children and there was something for everyone! We arrived to a lovely welcome pack of wine, bread, milk, crepes and many other goodies. The owners live on site but they are extremely discrete and we felt that we had the place entirely to ourselves. The village is beautiful with fantastic cycle routes and a beautiful walk up to the church and fountain and for us was not too far away from local shops and amenities. A short drive away is the lake but travel further afield to Binic on the coast to collect shells. None of us wanted to leave and are hoping to return soon. The only downside is that I am obviously not the only one who feels this way as much of the term time holidays are already booked up for next year! |
Guestbook for Manoir de Bolu
“ What a special place! We came here just the 4 of us and it was fab. Our 16 month old had hours of fun with the toy pushchair, whilst my 9 year old had more space to run around in and play games than he could ever of imagined. Everything is here you could wish for on holiday. My son loved the pool. Chris and Sue are lovely!!!very helpful. They have done a brilliant job here and we wish them every success. My husband is sad to be leaving, we are all sad to be leaving”
“ A really beautiful place, such a wonderful house and fantastic people. Would highly recommend and hope to return. They really have thought of every little detail and have made it home away from home. Thank you so very much”
“We came for a week’s relaxation in nice surroundings – what we got was a fab relaxed week in beautiful surroundings with all we needed in ‘Manoir de Bolu’. The pool is amazing and the toys in the garden and barn kept everyone entertained. We would definitely recommend here to anyone and Chris and Sue’s relaxed and discrete manner made them the perfect hosts.”
“ From the New Zealand contingent. Thank you Chris and Sue. We are glad that you spent 3 years locating the ideal home away from home, ‘Manoir de Bolu’ is certainly worth the wait!, we enjoyed the friendliness of the locals. With the children we found a particular appreciation for the park, the grounds the play equipment and of coarse the pool, nicely heated we might add. In all a memorable holiday and quite unlike anything we have experienced in New Zealand. “
“I don’t want to leave! It’s been the most wonderful holiday. The house feels so welcoming with the most marvellous decorative touches everywhere. Every cupboard held something exciting. Children were particularly well catered for. I loved the outside area to. So thoughtfully set out depending on whether one feels energetic or not. I would absolutely love to come back.”
“I can see why the swallows fly thousands of miles across the world to get here. It’s a wonderful place.”
Stuart - August 2009
"We all had a lovely time at Manoir de Bolu and would definitely recommend your lovely house to friends – in fact we already have! "
"We had a great time at Manoir de Bolu and really enjoyed our stay. Everything was great about the place and we found it an ideal base for exploring the many attractions this part of France has to offer. The children made great use of the play area and pool. It is ideal for all the family and had everything we needed for our holiday, which made it very relaxing. There are lots of things to do and see in the local area; excellent beaches, family activities and picturesque villages."
"We thoroughly enjoyed our second stay at Manoir de Bolu. The Manoir was extremely comfortable and fully equipped even down to the baby toys which were fully appreciated by the youngest guest. We found the information on places to visit very useful and enjoyed a visit to Lac de Guerlédan and the beautiful beach at Pléneuf Val André. Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you again in the future."
"Just to say we had a wonderful time...great accommodation; wonderful pool; beautiful countryside and fortunately fantastic weather!!! Will definitely recommend to friends."
