BookThe Loire Valley / Sarthe region
There is plenty to do locally from fishing, horse riding, and swimming in the lakes, boating, and wine tasting. A visit to the "old part" of Le Mans that is full of medieval architecture, with its narrow streets and old houses, not forgetting the Epau Abbey. Shop and meander around the restaurants, pavement cafes, delicatessens, chocolate makers and artistic craft shops including musical instrument makers, book binders etc.
Le Mans race circuit is legendary for its racing events such as the 24 hr and The Le Mans Classic car, not forgetting the motor museum.
Sarthe is a great place for golfing, having some of the most beautiful and natural courses. There are animal parks and gardens, some are in the grounds of a beautiful Chateaux, that are predominant in this region. There's the troglodyte caves in Troo, carved out of the Truffaut lime stone typical of this region. Many floral towns and villages, like Malicorne, the famous pottery town.
We benefit from a micro climate here so we have mostly hot sunny days during the summer months which last until mid November.
The Le Mans / St. Mars D'Outille area
St Mars D'Outille is a small village near the town of Ecommoy and the city of Le Mans. We are on the doorstep to the Foret de Berce noted for its of beautiful oak trees, ideal for outdoor pursuits. St Mars is also well known for its equestrian events, so if your a horse enthusiast this place is a must.
The Chateau de Segrais, in St Mars D~Outille, is a meditation centre run by Kadampa Buddist Monks, who hold regular workshops and courses throughout the year.
There are local markets held in most towns and villages nearby that sell local produce from fresh goats cheese to local honey, fruit in season and of course French bread, or you can go to a local "Brocante" and pick up a bargin. These are held most Sundays and Fete Days, thoughout the Summer months.

Virginia & Mike have a beautiful property in a secluded area of France. We were made to feel very welcome and they were both attentive to our needs; it's never easy taking a very young child on holiday but nothing seemed to be any trouble for them. The gite is pretty, it is attached to the rear of the main property which itself is situated in acres of woodland. The accommodation is all on 1 level; on entering the gite there is the kitchen/diner which leads into the lounge area (all open plan)then into a separate bedroom and then finally into a wet room bathroom. La Grande Saulaie is situated between St Mars and La Grande Luce, the former being a small village which has a lovely restaurant whereas the latter is a town with numerous shops in a typical French square and also boasts an Intermarche with fuel station. Le Mans is about a 25 minute drive and Tours in the heart of the Loire valley is about 1hr 15mins. This gite is a good base for the entire region if you don't mind driving as the main arterial route (the A28) is a short drive. If you intend to take it easy and stay local then Virginia has plenty of local walks ready for you. The gite is well equipped having everything needed to cater for the week or longer, there are some nice touches such as the equipped BBQ & outdoor seating area, free WiFi and Satellite TV if you need it. We loved the gite and Virginia and Mike who were the perfect hosts. |

In a very pretty and quiet part of France with forest walks literally in the back garden. Ideal for a relaxing break, but you do need to travel to sight see. The owners are very friendly and nothing seem too much trouble for them. English TV and Wifi are an added bonus. Response: Thanks guys, hope to see you again soon. Great guests. |
