Further details indoors:
Sympathetically renovated in 2007, Le Pommier offers premium quality accommodation whilst retaining its natural French rustic charm.
Its one King-size, one double and one twin bedroom sleeps 6 people comfortably, and all bedrooms have exposed beams and partially exposed stone walls. The Master, King size bedroom has an en suite shower room, featuring a large walk in shower.
From the ground floor entrance hall there are solid wood doors leading to all three bedrooms All bedrooms are situated on the north side ground floor, thereby providing cooler sleeping conditions during warm summer nights. Also situated on the ground floor is the family bathroom offering a full size bath, w.c. and shower. Outside the gite, there is a patio table and chairs and the gas BBQ is conveniently to hand for when it's Dad's turn to cook.
Rising from the entrance hall are the stairs which lead up to the light and airy open plan hay loft which retains many interesting features including the galleried stairs and the fully exposed roof structure. At the east end of the living area is the spacious lounge space with sofas, the wood burning stove, wide-screen TV with HD Satellite reception of UK FreeSat channels, DVD and i-pod docking station.
At the west end, the open plan kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances including a double built in oven, large American-style fridge and dish washer. The dining area features a large farmhouse table which seats 6 and from both kitchen and lounge, French doors provide access to the extensive south facing wooden balcony. This is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing morning coffee or watch the sun go down with a glass of the local red!
Further details outdoors:
Adjacent is the south facing, secluded swimming pool with separate changing facilities and loo. The pool is one of the largest privately owned pools in the area, measuring 13m x 6m, with a depth of 2.4m at the deep end. At the shallow end steps lead gently down to the perfect depth (1m), for children and toe dippers alike. The pool is surrounded by a large paved area incorporating a pool-side shower, and there are sun loungers as well as patio chairs, tables and parasols. At dusk, the pool area comes alive when strategically placed lighting illuminates both the pool area and the Summer Terrace, whilst the under water lights bring out the best of the clear blue water. The small, recently planted, 'orchard' with its eclectic mix of young peach, apricot, nectarine, plum and pear trees, lies just to the south side of the pool.
Overlooking the pool, the large Summer Terrace provides a welcome shaded area on hot summer days. Specially designed for outdoor living the Terrace is furnished with a large hammock, relaxing chairs for those who enjoy reading, a dining table & chairs, fridge and i-pod docking station. An outdoor Table Tennis table is conveniently situated adjacent to the Summer terrace.
Next to the Summer Terrace is the well equipped gym and 4 person Sauna and to the south side of the property, the main garden is laid to over 1000m2 of grass, giving plenty of space for energetic ball games, a more relaxing game of petanque or perhaps even a spot of kite flying, if the wind gets up! Mini-football goals, a volleyball/badminton net and a 14ft trampoline with safety net are available for those with energy to burn.

Enquire nowThe Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region
The Charente is one of the four departments which make up the Poitou-Charente region, together with Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne. Situated in the south of the region, just one department away from the Atlantic coast, the climate is mild and temperate, with a countryside that changes from vineyards and fields to rolling hills and forests, with hills and gorges in the east and south together with many rivers and lakes which provide the backbone of the region.
The region has one of the richest heritages of Romanesque art and there are many ‘must see’ monuments and buildings including Angoulême’s Cathedral St Pierre, the towering belfry at Lesterps Abbey, the murals at Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, the west front of Church St Jacques at Aubeterre and the magnificent château at La Rochefoucauld to name just a few.
You can’t live in or visit the Charente without experiencing the local markets and fairs. They are generally held in the mornings so be prepared for an early start as they tend to close around midday. You will find anything from fruit and vegetables to live or ready to cook poultry, as well as other household items for sale. If you're really lucky, you may even find a treasure or two! Visiting these local markets is one of the simplest pleasures of a holiday in France. As you wander, your senses will be aroused by the perfume of herbs and spices.... you will find quality fruit and vegetables at excellent prices, also meat, bread and cheese galore....in fact, the perfect way to begin your holiday is to visit a local Sunday market to stock up with fresh local produce.
The Le Lindois area
Ten minutes away is the pretty market town of La Rochefoucauld with its imposing Chateau and full range of shops and restaurants. The Chateau is open to the public for guided tours.
In the other direction you will find the well- preserved medieval town of Confolens, home to the annual world folk festival ‘Danses et musiques du monde’, which takes over the whole town in August.
The nearby lakes of Lavaud and Mas Chaban offer scenic picnic areas, sandy beaches, family restaurants, swimming, sailing, mountain biking and a fantastic play area for children. Almost 400 hectares of fresh water, set in the heart of the valleys, are ideal for fans of the open air.
Aventure Parc - Explore the world between earth and sky in 7 circuits with over 70 individual challenges of increasing difficulty.
Kayaking - Parents and children alike can try their hand in a canoe or kayak at Montbron on the Tardoire or at Aubeterre or Brantome on the Dronne.
Angoulême - Festival venue for comic strips, rock music, vintage cars, toys and games. The capital of the Charente offers a buzzing cultural calendar and every September hosts to the world famous Circuit des Remparts motor race.
Throughout the year, well-established festivals draw visitors from France and beyond. Each year The Comic Strip Festival (Festival international de la bande dessinée) attracts more than 200,000 fans of all ages who come to see their strip cartoon heroes come alive on the drawing boards and meet their famous creators.
The Festival des Musique Métisses, now a national reference for African, fusion and world music, showcases up and coming new artists alongside established major stars.
Ludoland, specifically for children and featuring the latest in toys and games and the Gastronomades, for gourmet produce, cookery books and media form all over the world.
Cognac - If you're a Cognac connoisseur, then a visit to the 'spiritual home' is a must! Almost all of the Cognac houses provide excellent tours and tastings throughout the summer. Cognac also hosts the famous Blue Passion music festival, held each year in July.
Saint Sornin Vineyard - In the valley of the Tardoire, close to the boundary with the Dordogne, winegrowers have been cultivating and harvesting vines in Saint-Sornin for 30 years. Tours of the Saint Sornin vineyard can be arranged and the 'cave' at the vineyard sells its own produce at reasonable prices.
Brantome - Known as "the Venice of the Perigord", this charming medieval town is built on an island on the river Dronne. A popular tourist hot-spot in the summer months, especially on market day (Friday) where there is a wealth of local produce on display. It's always fascinating to sit at one of the many cafes or bars and watch the canoeists paddling around - especially as they attempt to negotiate the weirs! With an abundance of activities, it's ideal for families and a golfers haven.
For The Golfer - Golf international de la Prèze. The courses are set in 65 hectares of wooded valleys. The ornamental lakes, slopes and undergrowth provide a range of natural difficulties. The fine fairways and fast greens make it a challenging course of international standard.
Golf de l'Hirondelle - Angoulême. It is built on a spur of limestone rock opposite the town. There are fine views of the cathedral and the pink tiled roofs. The 18 holes cover about 34 hectares in the St-Martin woods. The fairways call for good physical condition and a high degree of skill notably because they are very narrow.
Go-Karting - The circuit du Perigord, just 30mins away, is one of the regions major international karting circuits which hosts competitions for enthusiasts from all over Europe. With 2 circuits - the main track boasts a length of 1078m, whilst the under 14's try their hand at karting on the smaller track - there's lots to see! Go and watch the thrills, spills and skills of the drivers or even better, even if you are only an enthusiastic amateur, why not have a go yourself?
Velo Rail - All the year round, regardless of age or ability, the Railroad Charente-Limousine enables you to discover at your own rhythm the landscapes of North-Charente by an extraordinary 'Rail-bike' which runs on a disused railway line.
Futuroscope - Packed with thrills, images in giant-screen format, extraordinary encounters, mind-blowing shows, role-playing, and much more. Futuroscope lets you enjoy new excitement that will amaze you, play on your senses and involve you in the action, as you escape into new worlds of fun, live in the future today and see this world in a new light.
...and much, much more!

Le Pommier is a beautifully presented gite equipped with all you need for relaxed stay. It compares extremely well with with the best holiday cottages available in Britain. Sara and Les are accommodating and personable on-site hosts. They have an attentive but relaxed style that lets you enjoy their wonderful gites without being intrusive in any way. The summer terrace and pool were especially appreciated by the whole family as the temperature was in the 30's on most days. There is also entertainment provided by the chickens and rabbits, as well as eggs if the chickens are feeling obliging. The area is underrated in its rural beauty and the attractions of both the local towns (restaurants at La Rochefoucault and canoeing and poterie at Montbron)are worth experiencing. Slightly further afield, we would also heartily recommend a trip to Le Maine Giraud cognac house (recommended by Sara and Les) as a great "non-commercial" introduction to cognac and Angouleme for its character and charm. We would definitely stay at Le Pommier (or it's neighbour, Le Cerisier) again. 1 week is not long enough and we plan to stay for 2 next time. Response: Thank you for your kind and comprehensive Review. We truly enjoyed having you and your family to stay at Le Tilleul and we're thrilled that you were impressed with not just Le Tilleul, but also with the location, setting and the local attractions in the area. We look forward to seeing you back again before too long. |
