The Poitou-Charentes region

The Charente is one of the four departments which make up the Poitou-Charente region, together with Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne. Situated in the south of the region, just one department away from the Atlantic coast, the climate is mild and temperate, with a countryside that changes from vineyards and fields to rolling hills and forests, with hills and gorges in the east and south together with many rivers and lakes which provide the backbone of the region.

The region has one of the richest heritages of Romanesque art and there are many ‘must see’ monuments and buildings including Angoulême’s Cathedral St Pierre, the towering belfry at Lesterps Abbey, the murals at Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, the west front of Church St Jacques at Aubeterre and the magnificent château at La Rochefoucauld to name just a few.

You can’t live in or visit the Charente without experiencing the local markets and fairs. They are generally held in the mornings so be prepared for an early start as they tend to close around midday. You will find anything from fruit and vegetables to live or ready to cook poultry, as well as other household items for sale. If you're really lucky, you may even find a treasure or two! Visiting these local markets is one of the simplest pleasures of a holiday in France. As you wander, your senses will be aroused by the perfume of herbs and spices.... you will find quality fruit and vegetables at excellent prices, also meat, bread and cheese galore....in fact, the perfect way to begin your holiday is to visit a local Sunday market to stock up with fresh local produce.

Le Lindois

Ten minutes away is the pretty market town of La Rochefoucauld with its imposing Chateau and full range of shops and restaurants. The Chateau is open to the public for guided tours.

In the other direction you will find the well- preserved medieval town of Confolens, home to the annual world folk festival ‘Danses et musiques du monde’, which takes over the whole town in August.

The nearby lakes of Lavaud and Mas Chaban offer scenic picnic areas, sandy beaches, family restaurants, swimming, sailing, mountain biking and a fantastic play area for children. Almost 400 hectares of fresh water, set in the heart of the valleys, are ideal for fans of the open air.

Aventure Parc - Explore the world between earth and sky in 7 circuits with over 70 individual challenges of increasing difficulty.

Kayaking - Parents and children alike can try their hand in a canoe or kayak at Montbron on the Tardoire or at Aubeterre or Brantome on the Dronne.

Angoulême - Festival venue for comic strips, rock music, vintage cars, toys and games. The capital of the Charente offers a buzzing cultural calendar and every September hosts to the world famous Circuit des Remparts motor race.

Throughout the year, well-established festivals draw visitors from France and beyond. Each year The Comic Strip Festival (Festival international de la bande dessinée) attracts more than 200,000 fans of all ages who come to see their strip cartoon heroes come alive on the drawing boards and meet their famous creators.

The Festival des Musique Métisses, now a national reference for African, fusion and world music, showcases up and coming new artists alongside established major stars.

Ludoland, specifically for children and featuring the latest in toys and games and the Gastronomades, for gourmet produce, cookery books and media form all over the world.

Cognac - If you're a Cognac connoisseur, then a visit to the 'spiritual home' is a must! Almost all of the Cognac houses provide excellent tours and tastings throughout the summer. Cognac also hosts the famous Blue Passion music festival, held each year in July.

Saint Sornin Vineyard - In the valley of the Tardoire, close to the boundary with the Dordogne, winegrowers have been cultivating and harvesting vines in Saint-Sornin for 30 years. Tours of the Saint Sornin vineyard can be arranged and the 'cave' at the vineyard sells its own produce at reasonable prices.

Brantome - Known as "the Venice of the Perigord", this charming medieval town is built on an island on the river Dronne. A popular tourist hot-spot in the summer months, especially on market day (Friday) where there is a wealth of local produce on display. It's always fascinating to sit at one of the many cafes or bars and watch the canoeists paddling around - especially as they attempt to negotiate the weirs! With an abundance of activities, it's ideal for families and a golfers haven.

For The Golfer - Golf international de la Prèze. The courses are set in 65 hectares of wooded valleys. The ornamental lakes, slopes and undergrowth provide a range of natural difficulties. The fine fairways and fast greens make it a challenging course of international standard.

Golf de l'Hirondelle - Angoulême. It is built on a spur of limestone rock opposite the town. There are fine views of the cathedral and the pink tiled roofs. The 18 holes cover about 34 hectares in the St-Martin woods. The fairways call for good physical condition and a high degree of skill notably because they are very narrow.

Go-Karting - The circuit du Perigord, just 30mins away, is one of the regions major international karting circuits which hosts competitions for enthusiasts from all over Europe. With 2 circuits - the main track boasts a length of 1078m, whilst the under 14's try their hand at karting on the smaller track - there's lots to see! Go and watch the thrills, spills and skills of the drivers or even better, even if you are only an enthusiastic amateur, why not have a go yourself?

Velo Rail - All the year round, regardless of age or ability, the Railroad Charente-Limousine enables you to discover at your own rhythm the landscapes of North-Charente by an extraordinary 'Rail-bike' which runs on a disused railway line.

Futuroscope - Packed with thrills, images in giant-screen format, extraordinary encounters, mind-blowing shows, role-playing, and much more. Futuroscope lets you enjoy new excitement that will amaze you, play on your senses and involve you in the action, as you escape into new worlds of fun, live in the future today and see this world in a new light.

...and much, much more!

"One word, Excellent!"

I stayed here with my husband and two children for a week and we had a fantastic time. The owners are very friendly and so are their children. The Gite is light, airy and very comfortable. The grounds and communal areas are clean, safe and my children loved being able to play outside in the fresh air.

We couldn't have asked for anywhere better to stay and have booked again for next year with some friends.

Thank you very much for your very kind comments! It was our pleasure having you to stay and we look forward to seeing you again next year.

"Idyllic peaceful gite"

We had a very enjoyable week at le pommier, it is in a lovely peaceful location with great spacious grounds and a big pool. Plenty to do locally with lakes, walking, cycling, a great market and some pretty towns nearby. With the peaceful location it is a drive rather than a cycle to the nearest boulangerie but fine for us.
Les and family are very hospitable hosts and helpful in recommendations.

Thank you so much for your positive Review of your stay at Le Tilleul. We are very happy that you appreciated what we offer here and we look forward to seeing you again in the future.

"Wonderful, relaxing holiday!"

I stayed here for 2 weeks with my wife and two children (aged 2 and 6).

The house was great. Really clean and with all the equipment we could need for self catering. Our youngest had been amazingly well catered for, with the owners having provided a cot, stair-gates, high chair and even a buggy! Very, very peaceful at night (not counting the kids that is...).

The grounds and pool are lovely. Lots of space and lots of activities. All kept to a very high standard (very clean pool, for example). Les was great with the kids - helping them catch chickens to stroke or giving them rides on his mini tractor - and that made the holiday for them!

Plenty to do in the region, or you can just chill out on site.

The owners are very friendly and very helpful and a great source of local knowledge and advice without ever being intrusive.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a positive Review of your stay at Le Tilleul! Your children were a joy to have around and we really enjoyed having you all to stay in Le Pommier. Do come and see us again before too long!

"Perfect holiday"

We stayed at Le Tilleul in Aug this year and I have to say this place is idyllic.
The gite is immaculate and well equipped and the Hendersons were perfect hosts, discreet but available for anything we needed.
The facilities, swimming pool, summer deck, trampoline, boules were great for keeping the children entertained and we didn't feel the need to eat out every night as the gas barbie meant we could dine alfresco and drink without the worry of driving.
My only negative is that you do need a car as the Le Tilleul is literally in the middle of nowhere (10 min drive to supermarket) but to us that just made this an ideal get away from it all holiday! Cant wait to go again.

Thank you very much for all your positive comments. We strive to provide quality in everything we do at Le Tilleul, from the standard of accommodation and facilities to the help and assistance we offer our guests to ensure they have as fun and relaxing a holiday as possible and we are so glad you appreciated what we are doing here. We look forward to seeing you all again soon.

"Wonderful week in relaxing rural France"

Le Pommier is a beautifully presented gite equipped with all you need for relaxed stay. It compares extremely well with with the best holiday cottages available in Britain. Sara and Les are accommodating and personable on-site hosts. They have an attentive but relaxed style that lets you enjoy their wonderful gites without being intrusive in any way. The summer terrace and pool were especially appreciated by the whole family as the temperature was in the 30's on most days. There is also entertainment provided by the chickens and rabbits, as well as eggs if the chickens are feeling obliging.

The area is underrated in its rural beauty and the attractions of both the local towns (restaurants at La Rochefoucault and canoeing and poterie at Montbron)are worth experiencing. Slightly further afield, we would also heartily recommend a trip to Le Maine Giraud cognac house (recommended by Sara and Les) as a great "non-commercial" introduction to cognac and Angouleme for its character and charm.

We would definitely stay at Le Pommier (or it's neighbour, Le Cerisier) again. 1 week is not long enough and we plan to stay for 2 next time.

Thank you for your kind and comprehensive Review. We truly enjoyed having you and your family to stay at Le Tilleul and we're thrilled that you were impressed with not just Le Tilleul, but also with the location, setting and the local attractions in the area.
We look forward to seeing you back again before too long.

"This was a three generations holiday, the Gites were fantastic, the facilities excellent and the hosts wonderful."

It's not often we all get to spend quality time together so this holiday was very special. Our ages ranged from 67 to 9 years. The Gites were fantastic the facilities excellent and there was so much to see and do for everyone.

We would thoroughly recommend the Gites to all ages. Many thanks to Les and Sara, we hope to see you again soon.

Thank you very much for your generous comments and we are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay at Le Tilleul. It was a pleasure meeting you and your extended family and thank you very much for leaving the gites in such a clean and tidy condition - it is much apprecviated, and helps us to maintain the standards of quality and cleanliness we have set ourselves.
We look forward to seeing you again soon and thank you again for your kind comments!

"Exceptionally well equipped gite in tranquil setting"

Very warm welcome from our hosts, Les and Sara, even though we arrived much later than anticipated. The gite was a good size (larger than it looks in the photos) and ample for us (2 couples) and exceptionally well equipped. There was also a welcome basket as well as lots of other handy items to start us off (eg dishwasher tablets, rubbish bags etc). The setting is very tranquil and the view from the balcony is lovely with visiting deer most days. The summer kitchen is separate from the gite but this area is also extremely well equipped so it was just a case of transferring food and drinks as everything else needed was provided. Les and Sara were around when needed but we did not feel they were intrusive in any way and the fresh eggs from the chickens were much appreciated. Ideal for couples and also families as there are lots things provided to keep children occupied.

Many thanks for your positive and complimentary review of your stay at Le Pommier. We are always pleased when our guests appreciate the quality of the accommodation we offer and the tranquality of the setting here, and we are happy that you had a totally relaxing stay.
It was a pleasure having you as our final guests of the summer season and we look forward to seeing you again in the future.

"The perfect place to stay in France"

Les and Sara were perfect hosts showing us around the property and amenities which surpassed our expectations. The property was perfect and our hosts had thought of everything possible to make our stay comfortable even the fresh vegetables and eggs that were left on the dining table upon our arrival. The beds were so comfortable, as good as home, and the bed linen crisp, white cotton. The bathrooms were very clean with lovely big showers and white fluffy towels. The washing machine came in very handy throughout. The swimming pool and covered entertaining area were tranquil and restful and perfect for evening drinks and eating, Although the family live on site, they were not at all intrusive, We had glorious views over the countryside. The location is idyllic and peaceful.

There is a large supermarket/petrol station within a short driving distance.

We can honestlay say there is nothing we didn't like about the gite and our surroundings and we were genuineluy sad to leave.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a splendid review of your stay Le Pommier! We are always pleased when our efforts with regard to the cleanliness of the property and the quality of the furnishings provided are appreciated by our guests - so thank you for your kind comments on those. We really enjoyed having you to stay and the fact that we had two 1931 MG's visit us for the Circuit des Remparts meeting only added to the fun!

We look forward to seeing you again in the future when, hopefully, you will be able to bring your extended family along to enjoy the property as well!

"Summer Holiday"

We arrived late in the day and everything was ready, with just enough welcome pack to feed and water us after a long days travel. Our proprietors were available when we needed them but kept otherwise kept out of the way. We felt we had the gite and facilities all to ourselves, which is what we wanted. In fact our children 10 and 13 had a lovely time playing with their children. The gite had style, was well equiped, plenty of room, quiet, lots of games, leaflets, TV/DVD that worked. Being down a rural country lane a couple of miles from the main road, there was no road noise and at night the stars and peace was very good. The swimming pool was large, well paved, loungers, pool floats, etc, and the daytime kitchen/relaxing area an added feature for those less inclined to roast in the sun, but sit quietly realaxing in the warmth. Sauna a real benefit!
In the locality there is lots to do, old villages, castles, history, walks, recreation. It would take several years to see it all. Reccomend the tree climbing park, something different. We had a lovely holiday.

Thank you very much for your kind comments. We appreciate that as holiday home owners yourselves you have a keen eye for the details which can have a positive effect on a holiday and so it is extremely pleasing that you were totally satisfied with the property and facilities we offer here at Le Tilleul. Our aim is continual improvement and we hope to be able to offer even more recreational activities by the time you return next year and we look forward to seeing you then.

"Fantastic property in a beautiful setting with great rural views"

I was greatly impressed even prior to arrival by the attention to detail and assistance offered via Les on email and this was only re-enforced upon arrival at the property with a warm welcome for the family.

The property was of a high standard with all modern conveniences and a great welcome basket. It did, to coin the phrase, feel like a home from home. It was easy to find and lived up to all the high expectations we had based on the pictures and previous reviews online.

My own favorite spot was sitting on the balcony late at night watching shooting stars, it was just brilliant and a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a nice glass of wine.

Les and Sara went out of their way to ensure that we had a relaxing break and with the recent addition of WiFi we were able to keep in touch with home via email etc..while giving us all the privacy we wanted while we enjoyed the excellent facilities on site including the well equipped gym and the superb 13m by 6m pool that our girls loved and the terrace fridge. On top of this the extensive grounds being set up for football, volleyball/badminton and too many more to mention. Finally, fresh eggs from the the hens made it perfect.

Congratulations, top quality rural gite, excellent facilities. Many thanks for a great holiday.

Jon, Jo, Meg and Robyn.
