The Loire Valley / Mayenne region

The region is a rural verdant area with a climate not dissimilar to south west England. It is normally a few degrees warmer with spring starting earlier and mild autumns.
There is something for everyone to enjoy from shopping eg in Mayenne or Laval to visiting Roman remains with museum and exhibition at nearby Jublains. If you prefer medieval towns try Domfront with its biannual medieval festival or the walled citadel of Saints Suzanne with its summer Sunday jousting. Or you may prefer to wander around some of the prettiest villages in France such as St. Ceneri de Gerei with its artist studios, lovely restaurants and interesting church and walk ways.
Castles abound in the region from the local Lassey les Chateaux with beautiful castle and attractive restaurants and cafes to further afield in the Loire Valley itself with its many, many chateaux. A little nearer in history are the D-Day beaches, about 80 miles away on the Normandy coast.
There is plenty of scope for walking, cycling and canoeing such as at St Leonard des Bois in the Alps Mancelles or just have a peaceful walk in the many nearby forests.
The Le Ham area
The region is a wonderful rural area, handy for the ferry and close enough to the Loire valley ,Brittany and Normandy with the D-Day beaches and coastline for a day out.
Le Ham itself is a pleasant busy village with a local bar and lunch time restaurant ; it enjoys its yearly fete day in early August providing a car boot sale, meal, bar, entertainment and firework display. A really good day out! And if you miss this nearly all villages have something similar through out the summer months.
You can buy your daily bread from the bar "Chez Nellie" but do try the bakery a short distance away in Le Ribay - delicious bread! The nearest small super market is at Javeron but a bigger one is available at Villaines la Juhel about 5 miles away, a lovely little town in itself. If you fancy a meal out try the local spa town of Bagnoles de l'Orne with its many restaurants and cafes.A beautiful place with golfing, a casino, lake and park as well some exquisite shops.
The local tipples of cider and calvados are widely available as well as good beer from an English brewery not many miles away.
In season we can arrange a fungi foray or advise on what to find and where with help in identifying the edible from the inedible. A great chance to sample the true feel and taste of France.
