The Poitou-Charentes region

This area is well known for its exceptional sunshine record (over 2400 hours per year), mild climate and tranquil way of life. The area has a charm of its own and you will be met by big skies and a clarity of light which is much appreciated by artists. The safe beaches of fashionable Royan are 20 minutes away and it is here that you will find shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. Inland, and life is much slower and relaxed and it is not hard to find medieval villages full of charm.

Other places of interest within easy travelling time include: Saintes(to see the Roman Amphitheatre and take a boat trip on the Charente); Talmont (a very pretty small town with a 12th century church overlooking the sea); Mornac (another very pretty village with a small port); La Rochelle (a suberb walled town with a very attractive harbour and many open- air restaurants. See; Ile d'Oleron (wonderful beaches and Atlantic breakers); Ile de Re (very attractive harbours and open air eating in St. Martin and la Flotte); Cognac (visit the brandy distilleries of Martel, Courvoisier and Hine. See

Le Gua

The village of le Gua is within walking distance and provides for everyday needs (small supermarket, bakers, butchers, charcuterie, fishshop, pharmacy, tabac, bars and restaurants). A small market is held on Sunday. An excellent 3* restaurant is within easy walking distance from the house as is a wine shop selling pineau and a range of wines and gifts. The nearest large supermarket, open on Sunday is approx. 10km.

The attractive small town of Saujon offers a shopping centre (bars, restaurants, and range of shops/ supermarkets) as well as a comprehensive leisure centre with swimming pool and tennis. The monthly market is a real event and worth visiting if you are here on the first Monday of the month.

15km away is the fashionable, bustling resort of Royan with its sandy beaches and abundance of cafes, restaurants and bars along the seafront. The nearest beach, Le Chay is very safe for swimming and is supervised during summer months. A market is held every day and the Sunday market is well worth a visit.

During summer months numerous cultural events are held in Royan and surrounding towns. Visit the tourism website:

"Charming, comfortable holiday home"

I have stayed at the gite on many occasions because it is so comfortable, well equipped and reasonably priced. The gite itself has a lounge/dining room with a large sofa bed and two comfy armchairs surrounding a large open fire place. There's satellite TV with English channels and a DVD player as well as a hi-fi system; a large expandable dining table and chairs; a dresser with tableware, lots of table lamps, books and games. Just off this is a double bedroom with ever-so comfy bed, chaise lounge and fitted wardrobes. A recently refurbished shower room leads off the bedroom. From the lounge there is a single toilet and then through to the the galley kitchen with the usual appliances including oven, hob, fridge/freezer and microwave. To the right of the kitchen there is the single bedroom which in turn leads onto the shower room. To the left of the kitchen the laundry room is accessed down some steps through the boiler room (which hosts a large built in cupboard with cleaning utensils). There's a top loading washing machine, iron & ironing board. A door leads to the garden area from here. In the garage there are two bicycles to use and beach equipment as well as sun loungers/chairs and cushions. The theme of the gite is blue and white which is reflected in the tableware and furnishings. It really is a lovely gite with lots of very thoughtful and arty finishing touches. The garden is not huge but it's ample and secluded with a south facing aspect from the front door. The location is ideal; about 15k from the nearest beach and also Royan, with access to a good road network so it's easy to get to Rochfort or Saintes, for example. The gite is situated by the Chalons which are served by the river Seudre and so it has a lovely seaside feel to the area as well as lots of wild life. It's not far to Le Gua and sometimes we walk there to the bar in centre ville. There's also a new patisserie in walking distance at the top of the road and by the traffic island on the main road there's a selection of shops that are worth a look. We love the Seudre and the many little fishing villages that surround the area especially the very picturesque Mornac. We also love eating moules that have been baked under pine needles at la Tremblade port (as featured by Rick Stein). We always have a lovely holiday in this gite and we hope to return next year.

"Comfortable, well equipped, great location"

If you like the peace and quiet of a rural location but close enough to drive to some lovely beaches ( within 15 Mins Royan or 25 mins La Palmyre ) then you will not find a nicer or more convenient location. This single storey bungalow is deceptively large although only has 1 double and 1 single bedroom. The main bedroom has a great en suite with a superb shower. The kitchen is extremely well equipped as is the house. Boasts Sky TV for any rainy days, DVD player. There is a utility room with washing machine. The house is relatively easy to find , just down a lane, with parking in front of the garage. No back garden but a lovely wide front garden with plenty of garden furniture in the garage. You will find plenty of good restaurants in Royan and close by and is especially good area for sea food ( particularly Oysters and Mussels) Saintes , Cognac is not far away and La Rochelle is a must ( About 50mins / 1hr with a good park and ride facility). Highly recommend this accommodation and location
