The Loire Valley region
Much of the Loire Valley is World Heritage Listed, for a good reason, the river Loire and its tributaries are dotted with enchanting chateaux that stand majestically in the French countryside. Many have been restored to their former regal glory. So for a great day out you can discover famous castles in the area including chateau d'Amboise, Chenonceau, Azay-le-Rideau, Langeais, Villandry, and Azay-le-Ferron. Most are within an hours drive of the cottage; the furthest (chateau de Chambord) is an easy 1 hour 30 minutes drive.
You will also taste with happiness the local specialties, like goat's cheese from Sainte-Maure, the potted pork called Rillettes, or the famous little black chicken, La Geline.
The Loire Valley enjoys a temperate climate. In mid to late-June, you'll find that daylight lasts until almost 11 pm! Summers are long and warm... some days in July and August are likely to be in the mid-30's but mostly around 24 degrees Celsius.
Le Grand Pressigny
The village of LE GRAND-PRESSIGNY, in the Southern Touraine region of the Loire Valley, with its chateau ruins and prehistoric history is not only a destination for Palaeontologists but also the discerning tourist. The village has a charm of its own plus all the practical features of an active community such as a bank, pharmacist, doctor, butcher, baker, grocer, tabac / newsagent, florist, hairdresser and hardware store.
LA CELLE-GUENAND is just 7km from the town centre. And just 3km away is the famous restaurant, 'La Promenade', in LE PETIT-PRESSIGNY. The food is at the highest levels of delight and they have an excellent wine cellar.
For a little more activity you can go meandering across country lanes and along quiet tree lined roads, indeed the cycling is gentle with only the occasional hill to get the blood flowing. Or the Brenne Nature Park offers many off-road biking tracks.
There are lots of other activities around here - from fishing, swimming, and golfing; through to antique hunting, museums, and lots of arts & crafts to admire. There's even a health spa and casino a short distance away. And not forgetting alongside its Vouvray, Chinon, and Bourgueil wines, Touraine boasts nine appellations d'orgine controllee (AOC), inlcluding Sasnieres and Montlouis.
