The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
At the heart of Central Europe, where untouched nature and a rich culture combine to create a true paradise for all kinds of holidays, here you will find the Alps. Sports and recreation, stunning natural sceneries, unspoiled mountain peaks, deep-blue mountain lakes, rich green plateaus and the most picturesque towns and villages can be found here. Stretching from legendary Mont Blanc to the ski areas in the Dolomites, across the colourful orchards of Lake Bodensee and the quaint vineyards of Lake Garda, the Alpine region has a lot to offer in summer and winter alike - more than you even may imagine.
The L'Espace Diamant area of the French Alps is made up of 6 village resorts: Les Saisies and Hauteluce in the Beaufortain area along with Crest-Voland/Cohennoz, Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe, Flumet and Praz sur Arly in the Arly Valley.
The Le Cernix / Crest Voland area
Crest Voland is a ski resort located in the French Alps at an elevation of 1,250 meters or about 4,100 feet, and is also an authentic Savoyard village which celebrated the 150th anniversary of the annexation of Savoy to France in 2010. Crest Voland became a ski resort in the 1950s and has since been expanding having added a luge park and a 2 snow parks. It is also one of the ski resorts close to Mont Blanc and it owns 28 snow cannons.
The Chalet is situated about a mile from Crest Voland village centre, which has a tourist office, post office, church, restaurants, bars and shops including a baker, butcher, ski/sports equipment and clothing, souvenirs and two small but well stocked supermarkets. A large "Intermarche" is at Praz d'Arly (8.5km). There is also a hotel closeby to the Chalet, which has a bar with outdoor seating for drinks in the summer and a log fire for a cosy drink in the winter months. The hotel also offers a 'fine dining' type restaurant.
In winter during the skiing season, the 'Espace Diamant' ski area offers 185km of superb linked pistes, many of which are still very much undiscovered. The nearest button lift is 0.5km (10 mins walk) from the chalet and the nearest chair lift 1.5km. All levels of skier ability, from Beginner to Expert, are well catered for. The ski area includes 2 snow parks with jumps and one with an inflatable air bag for practising stunts. All equipment can be hired locally with lift passes starting from £172 per person per week and Ski Hire starting from around £90 per person per week (please note that this is a guide only). Ski school is also available for adults and children. These can all be organised locally or booked in advance online.
In summer the beautiful countryside is ideal for hikers with well marked trails. A variety of good treks can be made direct from the chalet. Fantastic views, abundant wildflowers and the sound of cowbells are features of most walks and if you are really lucky you may spot the elusive marmottes. There are over 72 lifts; some of the chairlifts are modified so that people can take their mountain bikes on them in the summer or for those who prefer to enjoy the scenery without using too much energy!!
Cycle and mountain bike hire, hot air ballooning, tennis and 'escaladventure' can all be organised in the village and there is a free 'plan d'eau' (open air lake style swimming pool) with facilities at flumet (6.5km). Cycling fans may wish to watch the Tour de France competitors toiling up the nearby Col des Saisies (6km).
During July and August the tourist office organises a varied weekly program for both adults and children offering activities such as tennis, volleyball, guided hikes, trampolining, kite making and keep fit. The surrounding villages also have their individual festivals such as the not to be missed 'Fete de Boucherons' (woodcutting competition) at Cernix (2km) and a lively 'Fete du Vin'at Notre Dame de Bellecombe (3.4km). Free transport by minibus is often provided.
Other places within easy driving distance are: Megeve (14km), Col des Aravis (18km), La Clusaz (25km), Chamonix (48km) and Annecy which is 51kms away.
