The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

This is a wonderful region of France, with ties to Britain (both friendly and not so friendly!) going back almost a thousand years. The 'Hundred Years War' provided fortified towns and Chateaux with stories galore.
Long described as 'the English countryside with sunshine,' which doesn't actually do either country justice, the area is justly cited for the weather and beauty of the scenery.
In the 'Perigord,' ( The ancient name for the area) expect long hot summer days, full of light and heat, occasionally we get a little rain-just to cool us down!
Many of the major tourist sites, of France, including places of historic and architectural significance, together with some of the 'Most Beautiful Villages in France', can be found in the region.
Lascaux caves (Paintings), Gouffre de Padirac (Spectacular underground caverns10 mins) Rocamadour, Gouffre de Proumeyssac (underground boat trip!), Monpazier, fantastic village,market (exciting professional cycle race here early August) you can watch from your restaurant table! Domme(underground caves and viewpoint high above the Dordogne river valley).
Most lively outsides pursuits/sports catered for. Golf courses 15 mins. Tennis-Le Buisson. Archery-Cadouin.
More important than almost anything here, however ,is the attention, even reverence, given to the gastronomic delights of the the 'Perigord'' -Garlic soup, duck breast, Truffles, walnut cakes to walnut liqueurs. Whole pages could be devoted to some of the finest wines of the World.
There is a vineyard 10 minutes from the house, and the heart of this massive industry begins at Bergerac.
This is a wonderful world of holidays, several visits would be needed to see everything!
Flights from all corners of the U.K.
The Le Buisson de Cadouin area
The Le Buisson tourist information office has details on the many concerts and events held locally. The Chateaux, Abbey's and Churches each year hold many pageants, shows and a variety of musical evenings. There are jazz evenings (some completely free) in Bergerac. There are tourist offices in all the larger towns, where the staff are generally very helpful. They have masses of information, and will book events or taxis, for example.
There will be event and local attraction/activities information, maps etc provided in the house, for your use.
During Summer many places have flea-markets and antique fairs. Look out for placards advertising them. Again the tourist office will help.
There are two small supermarkets in Le Buisson, with hypermarkets at Le Bugue and Siorac.
You will find markets in most towns on one day of the week, from about 8am to midday. Try St Cyprien on Sunday. Le Buisson is on Friday. Details of others in the house.
Le Buisson has a railway station, why not leave the car and relax, a great way to get to Bergerac or Sarlat, even Bordeaux.
The house is very close to some magnificent Chateaux:
Beynac is one of several perched on high, with fantastic views over the village and river valley;
Take a boat trip here, or just along the river at La Roque Gageac, truly one of the most beautiful places in France;
Castlenaud-with its medieval war museum the children will love it;
Chateau Monbazillac, home of the famous sweet white wine. Combine an historic visit with some wine tasting, maybe a meal in the splendid restaurant. Take some bottles home with you!
Award winning 'Bastide' towns and villages are but a very short drive. Visit Domme, Monpazier or Belves.
Lose yourself in the medieval mazes and ancient alleyways in the 'Old Towns' of Bergerac and Sarlat.
All of this within 40 minutes!
Limeuil, perched above the confluence of the Dordogne and Vezere rivers. Have a swim, then eat at one of the excellent restaurants in the village. Just five minutes from the house!
