The Le Boulou / Les Alberes area
Le Boulou is a small Catalan village bordering either side of the River Tech. It has a few small bars and Post Office plus a commercial area with a number of supermarkets open even on Sundays and easily accessible from the property. Freshly baked bread, Croissants and fancies are available everywhere but don't hesitate to stop at St Genis les Fontaines (5-min drive direction sea) to get a taste of the best French baguette we have ever tried!.
Here is a small selection of places of interest within easy reach of our house.
The Casino nightclub leisure complex in has a pleasant and friendly atmosphere. This town has sulphurous waters which have properties to treat respiratory problems and medical ailments.
10 km from nice beaches, 15 minutes from Spain and Dali museum in Figueras, close to the gorgeous Collioure an old and typical village where Picasso and Matisse lived and painted
Céret (10km) is famous for its Museum of Modern Art which has numerous Picasso paintings, sculptures and ceramics, including the famous bull fighting bowl series. The museum also features paintings by Chagall, Matisse, Herbin, Soutine, lots of Fauves and a few Impressionists. The top floor of the Museum hosts touring exhibitions. The museum is open 364 days of the year.
Take a visit to the Unesco World Heritage site Villefranche-de-Conflent (5 mins drive). Roam the narrow streets of this famous walled village with its quaint shops and restuarants. Travel up to Fort Libre upon the mountain, in a 4x4 and walk back down via the underground tunnel which leads back to Villefranche.
There is a little yellow train (Petit Train Jaune) which can be seen from our terrace and garden. It travels in both Summer and Winter from Villefranche-de-Conflent to Bourg-Madame, near Andorra, stopping at various places of interest including the ski resort of Font Romeu.
