*****Enjoyed-location, wildlife, weather, wine and food. Visited St. Savin, Chauvigny, Angles-sur-Anglin, Fontgombault Abbey & Oradour to name but a few. Holiday over too quickly.--Mr. & Mrs. Owen Darling
*****Had a wonderful two weeks at the Mill, wonderful place to unwind and relax with the family. Managed to catch almost twenty fish but the big pike proved too elusive. Eating out we have been spoiled for choice. St. Savin, Le Blanc and Chauvigny all have great restaurants. Some of the highlights for visiting must be Futuroscope, Chauvigny Castle and Abbey, Le Blanc's market on Saturday and the boat to cruise up and down the river. Thank you for your help and hospitality.--Guy Miller and Family
*****My wife and I planned a gastronomic week but we have enjoyed our time around the mill so much that we have eaten in every evening. I am glad we brought the binoculars, otherwise we would not have enjoyed the wild life as much.-- David Dunsmuir

I really don't know where to start, so to set the scene, the accommodation is a tastefully converted water mill located next to a small Chateau in the “Brenne” National Park area of France, roughly equidistant from Poitiers and Tours (an hour by road from either). We stayed in early July and travelled (early) by road from London and the Channel Tunnel arriving at about 17.00 the same day. That was with a one hour stop off for lunch. It would be very difficult to come here without a car as there is no public transport within a few miles. The Moulin is located at the end of a mile long single track road tucked away from the rest of civilisation, although there is plenty of wildlife to keep you entertained. The owners live in the Chateau next door and are there if you need them, but otherwise leave you to get on with whatever you want in your own peace and quiet. The nearest town is Le Blanc which is a fairly typical small French town with a small selection of eateries and obligatory but welcome supermarkets. The Moulin has three levels and they are reached from very authentic and rustic stairs. I am not the fittest person in the world so whilst daunting at first, they posed no problem; my teenagers took the bags up though! The ground floor is just that, ground. It is where the original mill workings were and there is still a big stone and some winding gear. One of the two boats you will have use of is kept inside as well as a washing line. So once up the first set of stairs you come to the main living area. This is a BIG space with a kitchen and living area. The kitchen has absolutely everything you will need and it was very clean when we arrived. Cooker, fridge, small freezer, toaster, microwave, kettle and well stocked cupboards with all the crockery and utensils you will need. There is a washing machine and drier and for those who like that sort of thing, an iron and ironing board. The living area has a main dining table with chairs as well as a couple of sofas and armchairs and a TV with a DVD player and Sky that offers all the usual UK Freeview channels, oh and there are some lovely views out onto the river and weir. So off up the stairs then and there is a toilet / bathroom on the left and then two twin bedrooms with wash basins and plenty of storage. The master bedroom is at the end and has a double bed with separate shower and toilet. All of the upstairs rooms are in what would have been the roof space so have lovely wooden beams all over the place, but these are tastefully restored and add character rather than just getting in the way, the decoration is superb and everything was perfectly clean, no cobwebs hanging from the rafters ! So once settled in it's time for a walk around the grounds. You are free to wander into the Chateau grounds and there is a small swimming pool which was cleaned and no doubt the owners will show you how to run the filter before you pop in for a dip. Back at the Moulin there is a gas barbeque on a small patio area with a garden table and chairs (you know the plastic ones). We made use of this and it cooks a mean meat feast. If you are in any way interested in wild life then you are in luck. On arrival there was a nest in the ground floor of the Moulin with some tiny swallows (?) being fed by mum and dad. By the end of the week we watched them flee the nest and take their first flights, quite magical. Bats… Not to everybody's liking but if you wander downstairs at dusk there are at least two that fly around inside. They are fascinating to watch and they make no attempt to encroach into the living area! All four of us stood watching them one night and they never hit us once even when we moved around. Outside we were entertained by some local wild cats. They will not bother you and run as soon as you go anywhere near them, but the barbeque smell did attract them. On day two we had a lot of aaaaw cuuuute noises when our children discovered a litter of five kittens just down the road. Dragonflies were a regular feature in all colours, shapes and sizes but apart from buzzing around they don't get in the way and they don't bite. There were a few rabbits but they run like mad whenever you are about. We had a mole (eat your heart out Jasper Carrot) Google it if you don't know what I am rambling on about. Oh there were a few frogs that croak quite a bit at night time, well squawk. We were able to watch a heron on a few days. None of us were bitten by anything all week, which for me is quite amazing, not a mosquito in sight. The river itself is owned by the owners so you have sole use. There are two rowing boats that you have use of throughout your stay and the children loved them. You are free to use the river both above and below the weir at will either in it (swimming is safe, but a bit muddy!) and fishing is positively encouraged and the stretch of river is for you and only you to fish on. We do not fish, but can assure you there are some pretty big ones around about as witnessed by their jumping. You can actually walk across the weir to the field on the opposite bank which I plucked up the courage to do, and am glad I did as it affords lovely views of the Moulin and Chateau. Prices range from £600 a week in late summer (pool closed) to £755 from May to June right up to £1295 in peak time. The owners have a UK bank account so money transfer is simple without need to covert currency. We were asked to pay a £200 security which was paid back immediately on our return and you are expected to leave everything clean and tidy on departure. |

Just returned from a wonderful holiday at this magical place. We'd seen photos beforehand, but our first sight of the beautiful watermill, with the fairytale chateau alongside took our breath away. The waterlily covered river was like a Monet painting, and we spent a glorious two weeks rowing, fishing, lazing in the garden and watching the wildlife. The mill was extremely comfortable, light, airy and very clean. Although ancient, it was full of mod cons, including a dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier. Our holidays usually involve lots of sightseeing and restaurant visits, but we were so enchanted with our watermill, and its surroundings, that we couldn't bear to tear ourselves away, and ended up not going anywhere at all, apart from a few quick excursions to the local supermarkets for provisions. A good gas barbeque is provided, and we decided that no restaurant could possibly provide a better view, so we cooked and ate all of our meals on the lovely riverside patio. The charming owners live in the chateau, and are on hand if needed, but are not at all intrusive. The mill is quite separate, with a private driveway, so we had complete privacy. We booked our next visit before we left, and can't wait to go back. |
