Au Charbonnier has a private pool, sits in a third of an acre in a quiet valley and is surrounded by woodland, meadows and farmland. There are no near neighbours so the property is totally private and perfect for a cozy relaxing holiday away from it all.

This charming cottage, which we have lovingly restored, has bags of character with a mass of original beams and stonework. The charcoal burner's original one room dwelling with its oak timber frame has been added to over the years (you'll be pleased to hear!) giving 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and we have extended into the barn to make a spacious sitting room. The house has a good internet connection. Everything is in good working order, and if there is ever a little hiccup we the owners are only 10 minutes drive away and will be only too happy to deal with it immediately.

Charcoal production is a centuries old tradition in the Aquitaine region and although the art is no longer practiced in the immediate vicinity, the charcoal you purchase locally for the barbecue (you must try the duck breasts, the local speciality) is sure to have come from somewhere in the Perigord where it is produced by slowly 'cooking' blocks of wood in a meule (earth oven) which removes all the moisture.

There are many magnificent Chateaux to visit in the region as well as fortified towns, wine tasting, and local restaurants that are very reasonably priced. There is a large reservoir a couple of kilometres away which you can drive or walk to, and then either walk round,(6kms if you are feeling energetic) or just sit down, open a bottle and watch the birdlife. (our recommendation!)

The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Lauzun is on the border of the Dordogne, and the Lot et Garonne. Bergerac is only 30 minutes away, where you can visit a multitude of vineyards, including Monbazillac, famous for its desert wines, and also for the stunning Chateau which does guided tours. There is also a shop in the grounds of the Chateau where you can sample some local wines, and buy them if they take your fancy!

We are very lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful undulating countryside, definitely a hit with budding artists where there is never have a shortage of things to paint, especially the magnificent views and the glorious sunflowers when they are in season.

The Lot et Garonne and the Dordogne provide a fun day out on the river in canoes for the adventurous, or a leisure boat for those who want to take life a bit easier. What ever you choose to do, you will find the locals charming and friendly, and always eager to help wherever they can.

A quiet market town, Lauzun has a good restaurants, a baker, a small supermarket, and a market on Saturdays.

There is a hypermarket 15 minutes away at Miramont, or in Bergerac which is 30 minutes away, and the beautiful town of Villeneuve Sur Lot is around 45 minutes.

All the towns in the area have a market on different days which our guests love to potter around, or just watch the world go by with a glass of wine in their hand.

For those who like a bit of fun in the evening, there is a night market during July and August in the town of Eymet, where you can buy local produce which is bar-b-qued in the streets, and you can sample some of the wines which are on offer by local producers at their own stalls.

If you are lucky, you might be holiday when the towns take it in turn to have their Bodegas, a night when you can roam around and sample food and wine, and listen to dozens of bands in the streets who play all sorts of music. The highlight for us are the drums that pound round the streets in the balmy heat of the evening, and with everyone joining in dancing.

There are Chateaux to visit, wine tasting, horseriding in the next village, and we are surrounded by the best selection of very reasonably priced restaurants you will find anywhere.
