The Aquitaine/Dordogne region
Aquitaine has a long history involving the English and was fought over for 100 years. Richard the Lionheart spent more time around here, than he ever did in England. It still is an area that fascinates the British; and many in recent years have made their home here. Its generally temperate climate, rolling landscape, wooded areas and vineyards match the passion and instincts, being wedded to the land, of the local population and continue to draw people to this region, who enjoy the lifestyle and traditions of the locals.
Lauzun is dominated by its château, which was visited frequently by Catherine de Medici. The château boasts two of the most noted top 10 cheminées in France.
A later Comte de Lauzun is credited with being the originator of the French Foreign Legion and was instrumental in the US War of Independence in helping the Americans overcome the English.
Lauzun now welcomes the British, and there are many fêtes throughout the year, at which large numbers of British now mix quite happily with their French counterparts to enjoy good wine, and a fine roast wild boar.
