P68 - Apple Cottage
Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
1¼ miles from Tregadillett, surrounded by rolling fields in the tiny hamlet of Trewithick, a stone-built, single-storey cottage, made private from the attached former cider barn where the friendly owners live, with its own separate entrance and enclosed, sheltered garden (picnic bench, barbecue) in front; use of larger, enclosed paddock area for playing/ball games, walking pets on leads (chickens housed at one end, owners are happy to show you around, sometimes eggs to collect). Inside, smart decor and modern comforts complement big oak beams and thick stone walls. Open oak porch with front door into living room (woodburner, TV/DVD) with lovely oak floor (rug) and 2 steps up to smartly fitted kitchen/dining room (slimline dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, freezer, larder fridge, gas hob/electric oven) with stable doors to garden; step up to a neat single bedroom with additional pull-out 2'6" truckle bed (beds can be linked to make a double), slate floor (rug) and hooks for clothes-hanging. Roomy, high-ceilinged double bedroom (5' iron bedstead) with apex beams. Smart, limestone-tiled bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). Best for maximum of 3 adults. Launceston Steam Railway stop at New Mills Farm Park, ½ mile. A peaceful rural location, not far from a major route (A30) for exploring more of Cornwall and Devon.

The West Country region
Cornwall's north coast: from the river Camel north to Bude and on to Morwenstow and the highest cliffs in the West Country, it is a mixture of great cliffs and beaches. Walking (coast path) and bird-friendly cliffs (usually no road near): peregrines possible. Great sand/surf beaches at Polzeath, Trebarwith, Widemouth Bay, Bude and Sandy Mouth; sandy coves at Port Gaverne, Bossiney, Crackington Haven, Duckpool, and others less accessible; Rock, also sandy, is the place for watersports, including sailing on the Camel estuary; very fine golf course (St Enodoc); mini-fjords at Port Quin and Boscastle. Port Isaac is very pretty round its cliff-enclosed harbour.
The well-worth-riding Camel Trail cycleway (bicycles for hire) follows the river Camel from Bodmin Moor to Padstow. Pencarrow is a beautiful house with wonderful garden. Tintagel has a ruined castle (King Arthur's?) on a wild headland. St Juliot church was restored by Thomas Hardy and 'a pair of blue eyes' nearly fell down a Crackington cliff. Bodmin Moor, its highest hills quite mountainous, is only a little way inland and Blisland, on its northern edge, is one of Cornwall's prettiest villages - makes a change from sea: so does lovely Lanhydrock (see Cornwall's 'Med'). Not far to Eden (see South Cornwall).
Tregadillett: village (church, pub) midway between the wild magnificence of the north Cornish coast (15 miles) and the more gentle, wooded south. Launceston, with its castle and little steam railway, 2 miles. Superb walking, fishing and boating on Bodmin Moor, 8 miles, and Dartmoor, 15.
