2 miles from North Hill in a secluded spot, an ancient stone barn opposite a Domesday manor house and little estate sawmill has been beautifully converted into a big detached house by the owner whose family have lived in and loved this little-traversed part of Cornwall for generations. Little access lane ends in ½ mile on the open moor - walks to Jamaica Inn (4 miles) past ancient standing stones, and Colliford Lake (fly-fishing, birdwatching). Gravel paths surround with large lawn (steps up) and wild, wooded garden beyond (owl box and lots of wildlife). Lady owner occasionally stays in an annexe overnight.

Inside, roomy, light, stylish and family-friendly with slate/oak floors throughout. Door to hall; big living (TV/DVD)/dining/kitchen (dishwasher, Aga - no other cooker) with granite worktops and butler sink, east-facing and full of sunlight and high beams, and sliding glass doors to side garden (table/chairs); utility room (washer-drier, microwave, freezer); conservatory/playroom with space to spread toys/games and sliding door to back garden. Two bedrooms – an elegant double with Persian rug and en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower), and a twin; shower-room (wet-room suite). From hall, stairs (stairgates) up to another twin bedroom (sloping ceiling), reached via a den (TV) with futon bed; bathroom (suite plus separate shower). Spring water. Best for maximum of 5 adults and 2 children. A total chill-out place.

The West Country region

Cornwall's north coast: from the river Camel north to Bude and on to Morwenstow and the highest cliffs in the West Country, it is a mixture of great cliffs and beaches. Walking (coast path) and bird-friendly cliffs (usually no road near): peregrines possible. Great sand/surf beaches at Polzeath, Trebarwith, Widemouth Bay, Bude and Sandy Mouth; sandy coves at Port Gaverne, Bossiney, Crackington Haven, Duckpool, and others less accessible; Rock, also sandy, is the place for watersports, including sailing on the Camel estuary; very fine golf course (St Enodoc); mini-fjords at Port Quin and Boscastle. Port Isaac is very pretty round its cliff-enclosed harbour.

The well-worth-riding Camel Trail cycleway (bicycles for hire) follows the river Camel from Bodmin Moor to Padstow. Pencarrow is a beautiful house with wonderful garden. Tintagel has a ruined castle (King Arthur's?) on a wild headland. St Juliot church was restored by Thomas Hardy and 'a pair of blue eyes' nearly fell down a Crackington cliff. Bodmin Moor, its highest hills quite mountainous, is only a little way inland and Blisland, on its northern edge, is one of Cornwall's prettiest villages - makes a change from sea: so does lovely Lanhydrock (see Cornwall's 'Med'). Not far to Eden (see South Cornwall).

North Hill: village (church, pub, ancient cottages and scattered farms) 6 miles south-west of Launceston (historic hilltop town with Norman castle, leisure centre – indoor swimming pool, tennis, gym, golf course and horse riding), deep in heavily wooded farmland. Beaches at Trebarwith and Crackington Haven, about 15 miles.
