The Tasmania region
Tasmania's small enough to get around easily but big enough to be filled with a million reasons to visit. The forests are greener than envy, the beaches bluer than blue and the mountain areas so wild and untamed you'd think you were in some surreal nature movie. The coastlines are like nothing you've ever seen before and the rivers and waterways are just waiting to be swum in, dived into, ridden on and fished silly.
Launceston is Tasmania's second largest city and has redefined itself as a cultural hub with vibrant cafes, museums and open parkland.
What's special about Launceston?
Gateway to the cool-climate wineries of the Tamar Valley.
The Cataract Gorge - a striking urban reserve.
It is graced with magnificent Victorian buildings.
. You can walk the elegant streetscapes and through century-old parks, which sit beside revitalised areas such as Launceston Seaport, with its waterfront eateries. A boardwalk links the Seaport to Inveresk, where you can visit one of Australia's best regional galleries, the Queen Victoria Museum at Inveresk.
The boardwalk also takes you to Home Point rowing course, passing Ritchies Mill, with its galleries and restaurants. Continue along the zig-zagging path into Cataract Gorge, a place of mystical beauty. Its steep, rugged cliffs and wild areas attract rock climbers and a chairlift allows all to enjoy the panoramic views. As a waterway it is also amazing in its displays of the power of nature; the normally placid 'basin' can become a torrent and whirlpool filled spectacle.
