The Paphos region

Latchi (also known locally as Lakki or Latsi) was formerly a sponge diving centre and is now a tranquil, slow paced harbour resort. It is the last resort on the northwest coast before entering the protected Akamas National park. The newly modernised harbour is beautifully situated in the sweeping Chrysochou bay. It has a fringe of excellent fish tavernas and asking for "the catch of the day" is a fish lovers delight. This area is perfect for organised scuba diving with many local diving centres. Latchi is only a 5 minute drive from the traditional resort of Polis.

Traditional,tranquil and downright charming,this small village borders the Akamas National Park,an area of outstanding natural beauty with deep gorges and sweeping sandy bays.It's one of the island's last lowland wildernesses so take advantage while you're here–it's a paradise for walking, cycling and bird spotting and you'll come across all sorts of rare flowers along the way. Back in town,you'll find a good selection of colourful cafes and friendly tavernas where you can rest your feet with a cup of coffee or get stuck into a full-blown meal.There's also a bank,well-stocked supermarkets and some great little craft shops where you can watch weavers at work on traditional looms or even join in a ceramic workshop.Getting back to nature, just outside the village hidden among the hills,you'll find the entrance to a complex cave system with subterranean caverns filled with jaw-dropping stalagmites and stalactites – don't miss it.If you simply want to chill out,the seclusion of nearby Lara beach is a sight for sore eyes with not a building in view – just soft sugary sands and a laid-back taverna. Paphos (or Pafos) is one of the most beautiful and ancient towns of Cyprus. Wherever one treads in Paphos he comes across its glorious history which dates back thousands of years, when the cult of goddess Aphrodite who emerged from its seas, flourished in this beautiful part of the world attracting many visitors from the island and abroad.

Today Paphos is a small harbour town, but in Hellenistic and Roman times it was the capital of Cyprus. Paphos seduces its visitor with its majestic landscape, lovely coastline, historical treasures and delightful villages where tradition is still a way of life.

Among the treasures unearthed, are the remarkable mosaics in the Houses of Dionyssos, Theseus and Aion, beautifully preserved after 16 centuries under the soil. Then there are the mysterious vaults and caves, the Tombs of the Kings, the ancient Odeon Theatre and other places of interest including the various Museums.
