The Pays de la Loire region
Situated in the Pays de La Loire, the department of Mayenne is sandwiched between Normandy in the north and the Chateaux of the Loire to the south. Day trips could take you to the Normandy coast to visit Mont Saint Michel (the second most visited place in France after the Eiffel Tour), the walled coastal fort of St Malo or the WW2 museums situated along the Normandy beaches. Alternatively take the road south to see the stunning house and gardens of the Chateau of Villandry and visit the vin yards of Vouvray.
For trips closer to home Falaise is the magnificent castle home of William The Conquerer or why not visit the town of Jublains where a Roman encampment was discovered in, around and underneath the current buildings. All the remains are now preserved and the museum provides for many interesting exhibitions throughout the year. A visit to Carrouges castle which is austere but captivating gives a glimpse into history from the 11th to the 20th century. Well worthwhile is a visit to the villages of Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei and St Suzanne both officially declared as a village of outstanding beauty.
2 kms from La Petite Maison is Chantrigné a thriving village with a local shop/post office, mobile local butcher, hairdressers, and one of the best local restaurants in the area for real traditional french country food. €11 for 5 courses including wine! Lassay-les-Châteaux also 2 kms from La Petite Maison is one of the Mayenne Departments six 'Petites Cités de Caractere' with its stunning medieval chateau, winding streets and pretty market square. The town also offers a weekday market, bank with cash point, post office, tourist information office, restaurants and supermarkets. A medical centre, dental practice and vet is also located in Lassay.
Within a 15 minute cycle ride is the Mellary Cider Museum where you can see and more importantly taste how traditional cider is made from the apple to the bottle. 6 kms away is Ambrières-les-Vallées which provides all year round activities including an equestrian center, sailing, walks/cycle routes to suit guests of all abilities. During the summer months there is an open air swimming pool, archery, mini golf, kayaking, canoeing and tennis. The town of Mayenne 20 mins from the house has a superb Musee du Chateau, bikes for hire and boat trips for lazy days on the river plus supermarkets, bars and restaurants in the main town square. For a quieter day out Fontaine-Daniel is a beautifully preserved village set around a lake with a traditional textile mill and fabric outlet or for total relaxation Bagnoles de l'Orne is a spa resort with may restaurants and bars to enjoy after a relaxing massage.
