The Nevada region
Nevada (pronounced Nev-ADD-ah by locals, not Nev-AHD-ah) is a state of wide diversity. The name is derived from the feminine form of "snow covered" in Spanish. Its climate varies wildly as there are tall mountains to the northwest and deserts in the southern part of the state.
The majority of the state is made of what is known as "basin and range" topography, with mountain ranges running north to south and vast expanses of flat land in between. The overwhelming majority (about 2 million) of the population lives in the southern part of the state (Las Vegas area) with another significant percentage in the Reno/Tahoe/Carson City area in the northwest (about 200,000) The rest (about 300,000 are distributed around the state.
The southern part of the state receives little in precipitation in the winter due to strong inversions; it will lavish occasional moisture from the Arizona Monsoon season in the summer. In the last ten years Las Vegas has been the fastest growing community in the entire United States.
Major tourist attractions in Southern Nevada include Las Vegas, Area 51 (Groom lake), and Hoover Dam (Boulder city), as well as the Grand Canyon within close proximity. Due to this Las Vegas sees plenty of gamblers and passer bys on the way to the Grand Canyon. Its vast diversity of climate makes this an ideal place to visit.
Las Vegas area
Those famous lyrics to Elvis' classic "Viva Las Vegas" pretty much set the tone for Sin City, don't they? The town that was once out in the middle of nowhere changed its course forever when gangster Bugsy Siegel came from back east and envisioned a mecca for gambling and entertainment. His famous Flamingo Hotel opened in 1946, and 61 years later, Las Vegas is now considered the "Entertainment Capital of the World"
The city is known for its giant hotel/casino complexes, great golfing, cheap buffets fantastic nightlife and intense summer heat. The summer times can see temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Las Vegas is known to be getaways for bachelor/bachelorette parties and also weddings/ceremonies in casino chapels.
The city of Las Vegas was named "American City Of The Year" at the World Leadership Awards. It has been recognized as a world leader and the American City of the Year for its commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents. A few years ago they tried to make Las Vegas into a family place. Oops, big mistake. Today, they have changed back to the idea of "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas".
There are other things in the region to check out, such as a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon, the Hoover Dam to the southeast, Red Rock Canyon National Park to the northwest, Valley of Fire, Lake Mead, Death Valley National Park or the Mojave desert.
