The Andalucia region

Do you want to see Spain as it used to be ? Then come and visit Las Alpujarras. Some of the villages are tourist atractions with the accompanying souviner shops etc, but there are many that are completely undeveloped and retain their tiny white houses, on narrow streets, many of which cannot be access be car. See the flat roofed houses, built the same way as the moors made them 500 years ago! Although electricity came here in the 1970s, and most houses now have mains water and drainage, local people still collect their drinking water from the fountains. Donkeys and mules are still used to transport items through the steep narrow streets and to plough beneath the olive and almond trees.

The days are hot in summer and warm the rest of the year (although we do get some rain!). But remember, some of the higher villages are at over 1200m and it gets cold at night in winter, a great opportunity to light the woodburning stove !
