Casa Aloe
About the home
Casa Aloe is located on the very edge of the ancient village of Atalbeitar, one of a collection of seven white-washed, moorish villages that make up La Taha of the Alpujarras, a south-facing valley on the slopes of Mulhacen, the highest mountain in Spain, the house is situated minutes from the Sierra Nevada National Park.
The village has ancient donkey lanes that make it a car-free village, peaceful and safe for children.
The house has been recently restored using traditional materials in original ways, with beauty and comfort in mind.
Chestnut beams, bedrock corners and many unique touches give it a rustic charm.
We, Tom and Carmen ( the owners) are both artists, and have delighted in creating a space that is simple but harmonious. We have spent the last 7 winters restoring it with all our love and care, and so we are very happy when people come to enjoy our work.
This winter we are building a swimming pool, at last! and it will be heated in the colder months, it is Moorish in style with arches and tiles... but we have no photo yet as it is still being created, certainly it will be finished by March and we will post photographs then.
There is also an interior patio, shady and plant-filled to escape the heat of the midday summer sun, where there is a Barbecue available for your use.
As well as two large terraces with spectacular views, the main one is totally baby, toddler and child proof. Super safe as we now have a toddler ourselves!
And speaking of children, we have a few toys for them too, like a trycicle! as the village is car free you can enjoy giving them rides through all the exciting laberynthical streets...
Get cosy beside the open fire, eat out on the terrace under the pergola with the untouched valley beneath you, explore our selection of games, or just relax and read a book.
But we also have television with many channels and you can watch all programs and films in the original language.
A DVD player is available too.
And we have internet too if you need to catch up with your life.
Enjoy the cultural experience of an Andalucian village, whilst having the peace and quiet of a rural retreat if you so wish.
It makes an ideal holiday base for lovers of beauty and nature, popular amongst artists and walkers, and it´s proximity to the Sierra Nevada National park, offers a whole range of outdoors activities in a stunning location.
We can help you organise horse-riding for novices or fully-experienced (or both together), tennis or point you in the right direction for unforgettable walks with incredible views.
There are in the house as well as other suggestions a collection of maps with detailed walks via the moorish paths.
In the evenings explore the variety of restaurants and bars in La Taha, where the tradition is to give a free Tapa with every drink, and where often you can catch an evening of local music.

The swimming pool is semi-indoor, meaning that in the cold months we close it up so that it is indoor and heated...and in the warmer months it is open to the patio with access to the sunny terraces.
It always has a roof. We have done it this way because these days we believe the sun is harmful and the water takes away the protection creams, so this way you and your children can swim all day without getting sun damage and then go to the sun deck and put your protection cream.
Photographs will be posted as soon as we complete the pool, we are very excited!
Further details outdoors:
The village has narrow beautiful streets and a charming square which fountain water that comes from a spring. It is car free, and a haven for walks and children games.
ACTIVITIES:
There are local people that provide a number of interesting activities, like flamenco classes and specialized walks. Please let us know your interests and we will try to put you in touch with them.
For example, we are very near a family that does excursions on horse around the area, its a National Park and very beautiful. Also their horses are gorgeous and gentle.
If you wish to do this they are happy to pick you up from the house and return you after your adventures.

The Andalucia / Granada Province region

Plenty of sunshine all year round and a good supply of water from the highest mountains of Spain make this area a lush and rich landscape. Great for everything from beach life to mountain trekking.
Our house in Atalbeitar, situated in the wonderful Alpujarra valley, is on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. This village has not changed since the time when the Moors lived there, it is one of the very few well preserved villages remaining, a hidden treasure with a magical atmosphere. More about local activities bellow.
57 Km away is Salobrena, an old Moorish coastal town with sandy beaches, good fish restaurants and an impressive cliff-top castle. A short distance from there and you can find all manner of hidden coves, beaches and villages to explore.
Almunecar is 68 Km away, this is another historic coastal town that offers it all. Including a magnificent Flee Market on the 1st Saturday of every month.
Granada is 97Km away, with its fascinating historic centre, the Alhambra palace, 'hammams' (Turkish baths), the old Moorish quarter Albaizin and superb shopping.
Also the entire province of Granada offers free Tapas with each drink you buy, including Atalbeitar.
The Las Alpujarras / Atalbeitar area
All amenities:
Pitres, another white jewel is 3km by road, or a pleasant 2 km cross-country walk and it is our nearest centre, with all amenities...Market day on Fridays, bank, supermarket, bakery, bars and restaurants, and a large open air swimming pool surrounded by grass lawns and fine views.
In Atalbeitar:
We are by the biggest National Park in Spain, the Sierra Nevada National Park, and I guess it is best to google it and find the huge amount of great places its offers.
There are many wonderful spots to visit, the Old Mosque , the old springs, one of which has fizzy water, the ancient roman bridge, the peaks around us, the waterfalls and the pools formed in some of the streams, great for deeping in!
You will be able to enjoy the many village fiestas in the 7 villages nearby but also twice a year in ours!
Ferreirola, Mecina, Fondales and Portugos are small villages all very close to Atalbeitar, between 15 and 30 minutes walk in different directions by the Moorish paths. They all have great character and charm. They are very worth visiting and a gorgeous walk.
Trevelez, 9km, is the highest village in Spain, and also worth a visit for its dramatic location.
And the whole area is famous for the delicious Jamon Serrano.
Worth mentioning also is the network of good walking paths criss-crossing this area of rich wildlife, the most famous of which is the 'Camino Real' or GR7, which passes through the village of Atalbeitar, en route from the coast of Almeria to the city of Granada taking in the breathtakingly beautiful views and villages of the area.
-Also available are pony trekking and mountain-biking, climbing, etc.
-And for those drawn to spiritual exploring, the Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Ose Ling is approximately 30 minutes away by car.
-Skiing:
-The Sierra Nevada ski resort is 80Km away, where 35km of slopes and very reasonable prices make for an exciting and affordable day out. The season runs from December through to end of April. Please check each year.
In the house we have a book for our guests where we wrote tips and recommended places to eat and things to do that might help you have a wonderful time.

The nearest airport is Granada, at 93 Km, which now receives regular flights from the UK (Check Ryan Air). Malaga international airport is also nearby at 149 Km (Check Easyjet, Thompson fly, and Ryan Air, Jet 2, to name a few of the budget airlines serving Malaga).
There is a public bus service serving the village of Pitres (3 km away) and a taxi service take from there to Atalbeitar. From Pitres and to Pitres there are 3 buses/day connecting it with Orgiva, which in turn has connections to the major cities.
But we recommend hiring a car to be able to appreciate fully what the area has to offer. This is easily organised over the internet, (google search "Car Hire Malaga/ Granada Airport) We have always been well looked after by Carjet and Helle Hollis.

From our busy London lives to the wonderful peace of car-free
Atalbeitar! Our stay at your beautifully restored house was just what we were
looking for to unwind and relax.... Fresh air and views from the terrace,
long walks through wildflowers and riverbanks on ancient paths, good
food in the villages, reading in the evening in front of the log fire,
and waking up to the sound of birdsong and goat bells tinkling in the
hills.
We had an absolutely perfect holiday and will look to return. Thank you
so much! Anna and Eric.
From: Emily Kessler. Hi, just a quick note to say thanks for the rental of the house last week, it was blooming marvelous. So marvelous in fact that we've not even minding the horrible weather on our return because we know we had such a good week. Just far far far more wonderful that we could ever have hoped for. Thanks again Emily
From Steven Hoare - We had a great holiday the house was prefect, it gave us all the space we needed and you really have done a great job in renovating it. The walking that week was excellent....... Everything worked out perfectly and Fran and Fiona were extremely friendly and helpful. We are all looking forward to returning at some point in the future (in my case, in just a couple of weeks!)
from Archie Lockie:
I thought that the House was fantastic and a perfect location out of the way to spend a week doing what we wanted to do. The house had everything required and the only wee problem was our mobile phone reception but what would you expect when you are living in the highest mountains in Spain. The Local representatives were friendly and welcoming and sorted out any minor problems. Facilities outside the house were excellent and the meals we had out were fantastic and about half to two thirds of the UK prices. By all other tourist complaints it would be expensive to eat out and drink out when on holiday. Where in UK holiday locations can you get a litre of Smirnoff Vodka for a tenner and live and eat out for a week on 150 euro.
That's my say Archie Lockie
