Cortijo Manzano is at 1200 metres above sea level and perches above the delightful white village of Canar with spectacular views that extend to the surrounding Alpujarras and the Mediterranean. Even the Rif mountains of Morocco can be seen on a clear day! It has been lovingly renovated blending traditional ideas with modern simplicity. The social centre of the house is the open plan living room which has a magnificent Alpujarran fireplace with a wood burner, TV and WiFi. Take a 10 minute stroll down the road to Canar and you will find a grocers shop, pharmacy and 3 small local bars serving drinks with traditional tapas.

The house is built on 2 levels. The lay out lends itself to a communal feel in the main living room while offering privacy and space in the bedrooms. Walking through the hall to the open plan kitchen and spacious living/dining room gives one a real feeling of country house grandeur. The mountain views from both these rooms are spectacular and the sunrise in the spring gives a beautiful red glow to the room.

This lower level also has one ensuite double and one ensuite twin bedroom. The upper level has one double bedroom with a twin bedroom next door and they share a family bathroom. There is also a third room with a double sofa bed which can be used as a bedroom or a small sitting room.

The house has a number of Eco friendly features with water from a borehole, hot water from solar panels (topped up by an oil fired boiler) and electricity from solar panels.

Swim in the private 8m x 4m swimming pool and take pleasure in the magnificent mountain and coastal views. In summer enjoy sitting in the welcome shade of chestnut, cherry and olive trees and help yourself to the many grapes which can be harvested in the autumn. Eating outside is a delight, choose from two spacious terraces, one with a large outdoor table and chairs for 10 people.

Canar is a lovely 10 minute walk down the hill, Orgiva, our local town in the valley, is a 20 minute drive away and there are many other pretty white villages within a 30 minute drive. The coast at Salobrena is a 45 minute drive and Granada is an hour away with the stunning Alhambra Palace. Golf courses and horse riding are about 45 minutes away and some lovely walks can be done straight from the Cortijo.

Walking in the Alpujarras is probably the most popular pursuit, not surprisingly, as there is a huge network of footpaths from the foothills nearby to the highest mountain in Spain, Mulhacen. The famous GR7 (part of the E4), which starts in Tarifa, Spain and ends in Athens, Greece, goes through Canar, a few minutes walk from Cortijo Manzano. Take a 40 minute stroll from Canar to a dramatic waterfall or for attempting the big stuff there is the isolated Poqueira refuge at 2500 metres to stay in overnight. The refuge has 84 beds, hot showers and serves plenty of wholesome food and drink. It is advisable to book especially at weekends.

Horse riding is available in a number of places nearby, catering for beginners and experienced riders. There is something very earthy and natural about exploring a new area from the top of a horse.

The Andalucia region

The Alpujarras are the region between the Mediterranean and the Sierra Nevada mountain range in southern Spain. At 1200 metres above sea level, Cortijo Manzano perches above the quintessential white village of Canar with views that extend to the surrounding Alpujarras and the sea.

Granada offers a vibrant cultural experience only an hour's drive to the north, while seafood paella and barbequed squid await 45 minutes away on the golden coastal beaches of Salobrena to the south.

Don't let the map fool you. On a clear evening, you can see over 100 miles, catching the ridges of Morocco silhouetting the sun as it christens the horizon.

Las Alpujarras

Canar is a quaint little village of the Alpujarra, modest in size but brimming with personality. Angeles Bar is a delightful little place to grab a mid morning coffee with views from the balcony extending across the valley, while Piki's is a must for an evening beer and a bite of delicious tapas... tapas on the house of course!

A mere 10 minute stroll down the hill from Manzano, the walk to Canar really is the ultimate minimalist justification for the inevitable excess daily consumption of beer, sangria and tapas. Don't worry, for those nurturing a hangover there is a pharmacy and a general grocery store for anyone in need of their morning bread, milk and eggs etc.

We love supporting the local businesses not least for the villagers but also to absorb the rural charm and refreshingly passive pace of lifestyle. Mules and goats suddenly appear in the middle of the road, a caballero strides into the square on a stunning white Andalucian steed, a raucous procession parades the cobbled alleys for a religious festival, don't worry... it's just another day in Canar.

Tourism has not reached Canar yet but if you are looking for more activity you can find shops full of beautiful artefacts just a 30 minute car drive away at the 3 villages of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira.

Orgiva, our local town in the valley, is a 20 minute drive away and has an eclectic market every Thursday morning. It is the 'go to' village for supermarkets, bars, restaurants, banks and other more specific shops.

On your way to Granada stop off in Lanjarron to sample the different sweet clear waters from the many Fuentes throughout the village, pamper yourself with a treatment in the Hamman baths and make your way to the fascinating city of Granada (just over an hour away from Cortijo Manzano) with its complex mix of Moorish and Christian heritage. We recommend parking in the Alhambra car park and from there walking down to the city beside the palace, surrounded by beautiful trees and the sound of flowing water. Once you have arrived in Plaza Nueva it is possible to take a bus up to the Albaicin but the greater experience is to walk up to it and visit one of the restaurants at sunset overlooking the Alhambra. The Alhambra receives more than 3 million tourists a year, which makes it the most visited monument in Spain. With its beautiful palaces, gardens and patios, its ancient towers and walls, one can imagine what is would have been like to live in Granada in the Nasrid dynasty, when the city reached its peak. Due to the great demand for tickets and to the restriction of the number of visitors per day, advance booking is recommended. Visit one of the websites to book your tickets

There are some good restaurants to be found on the coast a 45 minute drive away at Salobrena, Marina del Este, La Herradura and many others. Sample the sardines barbequed on the beaches at Salobrena and enjoy great snorkeling and scuba diving at Playa Marina del Este and La Herradura.

"Stunning property in a beautiful location"

The photographs don't do justice to the property. It is a beautiful and imaginative Spanish Cortijo, and appears to have been built to a high specification. The views from the property are unbelievable. Highly recommend this rental for anyone wanting a quiet mountain location with easy access to fantastic walks and scenery. A truly lovely holiday home, and one that will be hard to resist revisiting.
