Cortijo Caliz is our home which we have decided to let for the summer. We therefore do not have many reviews to boast of, but we feel confident that anyone would love this house. We have refurbished it with style and filled it with lovely furniture, some modern and some antique, with Moroccan and Spanish influences. The house sits in half an acre of cyprus, olive and almond trees, stretching across three terraces. On the lower terrace, partly secluded by trees and shrubs, is the 9m (30ft) swimming pool with spacious stone terrace, perfect for sunbathing or relaxing in the shade.
The house is generous in proportion, very suitable for a large group of family or friends. There are several private spaces in the house and the garden, so it's easy to be separate, but the rooms and main patios are generous enough for you all to be together if you choose. The living room is double height, with a barn style pitch roof and a raised dining area with large table and chairs. The entrance hall is also a sun lounge which overlooks the pool and faces south to the fantastic Contra Viesa mountains. From the living room, looking north through the french windows is the Sierra Nevada. It's 360 degree special!
We have spent much time creating a beautiful garden, from the formal entrance gravel garden, along a stone path with pretty fountain, you will be surrounded by flowers and shrubs. The main south facing patio, accessed from the kitchen, is partly shaded and furnished with sofa/coffee table/chairs and large spanish-style dining table, perfect for al fresco evenings.
There are five double bedrooms, three are ensuite, additionally there's a brand new house bathroom. Our plumbing is bang up to date, with 4 of the 5 showers being new and very efficient 'overhead' showers. The house is spacious and full of light, with plenty of room to be private and quiet, or to be together and enjoy the company.

A beautiful old, country house with lots of room to move. With 5 beds / 4 bathrooms, it sleeps 10 plus baby comfortably.
The focal point is the large, double-height living space with galleria around two sides leading to bedroom 1. The dining area is spacious with dining for 10, it's situated on a raised level in the large living space and leads to the kitchen. Typical of an old Spanish country house it is on many levels but this makes the house interesting and special. From the dining area you enter the kitchen which leads onto a south facing patio with sofa, coffee table and dining table, perfect for al fresco drinks and dining for 10. From this terrace there are spectacular views of the coastal mountains and the sweep of the valley. It's just fantastic at sunset.
The large kitchen has a 5-ring hob, overhead extractor, electric oven, microwave, ample work surfaces, dishwasher, washing machine, iron/ironing board, walk-in pantry with fridge-freezer. Also a large table/chairs for indoor breakfast.
There are five bedrooms, three of which are ensuite. Bedroom 2 is L-shaped with extra room and bed for a child or baby and french windows leading on to a further patio which overlooks the pool. There is also a brand new house bathroom, beautifully fitted out with spacious walk in shower.
The owners live in the adjacent building and are on hand for support and advice. However your privacy, and a quiet holiday, are guaranteed.

There are several garden areas, including the landscaped front entrance garden and private lower terrace where the 30 foot pool is located. The trees create privacy and much needed shade although the pool is in full sun all day. The gardens and pool terrace are linked by stone pathways and sheltered by over 25 trees: almond, olive jacaranda and a giant eucalyptus which we have grown from seed. The pool area is especially attractive, paved in light stone and surrounded by trees and bamboo. There are loungers, chairs and umbrellas for shade. Overlooking the pool is another terrace next to the entrance and sun lounge, here you can relax in the shade under a beautiful almond tree with just the birds for company.
At the front of the house, leading off the kitchen, is the main patio for eating and relaxing in the shade. It is partially covered and furnished with comfy sofa and chairs and a large spanish style dining table, perfect for al fresco evenings facing the sunset. The BBQ is just nearby, on the outer terrace facing the mountains.
We require a 30% deposit to hold the booking with the balance of payment due 4 weeks before the start of your holiday.
The Andalucia region
Andalucia is the the hottest most southerly part of Spain, the Costa del Sol is its coastline with Costa Tropical being the coast of Granada Province where Orgiva, our town, is located. There is much history and a lot to see here including and especially Granada itself with the famous Alhambra Palace, and the very eclectic old town which is part Arabic (the Albaycin) and part Spanish. Here you'll find the impressive cathedral and many elegant landscaped squares where you can enjoy tapas with wonderful (and inexpensive!) riocha wine. There are many towns worth a visit, eg. Alhama de Granada, and spectacular landscapes created by the Coastal mountains and the Sierra Nevada, the latter has the highest peak in Southern Europe - Mulhacen. Walking and skiing are popular activities here from October to April.
Orgiva is in the Alpujarra Valley which is an area renowned for its natural beauty. We are 35 mins drive from the Costa Del Sol, the nearest beach is at Motril. There are many beautiful beaches and interesting resorts including Almunecar (Jazz Festival in mid July) La Herradura, and Nerja which has several beaches.
Orgiva itself is a charming working/market town with all the necessary amenities including supermarkets, banks and a hospital. There are many bars and restaurants and the town's central Plaza really buzzes at night, so there's plenty to do until the early hours, including two discos.
The Alpujarra Valley is famous for its mountain walks and the three highest villages in Spain are half an hours drive from Orgiva, Capilliera is one of Spain's prettiest villages. There is horse riding, hang gliding and bikes for hire, and the nearest beach at Motril is just 35 minutes away.
