The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
The region is at the foot of the Pyrenees and enjoys a dry and sunny climate for most of the year. April and November can be rainier, but spring flowers and autumn leaves are enchanting, and the temperature is often ideal for walking or sightseeing. The scenery is extremely varied: endless beaches, rocky coast and high cliffs, vineyards, fruit and vegetable farms, horse-riding stables, wooded hills and mountains, historic villages, serious mountain ranges complete with ski resorts and thermal springs and spas.
The Mont Canigou (3000 m) is only an hour's easy drive from the sea. The cities of Perpignan and Narbonne are culturally-vibrant, picturesque, and friendly. One of our favourite "things to do" is a visit to the Saturday morning market in the nearby village of Céret, which also owns a well-known modern art public gallery. and several lovely craftshops.
Laroque des Alberes area
Laroque des Alberes is a charming village which has retained the main tower of the old castle. The village grew up in a circle around the first fortifications. It is close to the sea (12 km), and the mountains rise up right behind it. The area is a walker's paradise. Cycling is also an excellent way to explore the area, which boasts a large number of small and winding roads .
The tourist office (Maison de la Randonnée) is staffed by knowledgeable and friendly people. Most of the cultural activities take place in the spring and summer, beginning with the St. John's Festival (and public barbecue) on June 24th, as well as during the Christmas season.
Shops and services can be found around the village square: two excellent bakeries, a butcher shop, a small grocery, a newsagent (with Internet access), the tourist office, a pharmacy, an ATM, the post-office, and two telephone booths. There are several good restaurants in or around. the village. A miniature shopping mall (with a well-stocked supermaket , and a good bicycle shop) is only 2 km away from the village centre..
The view from the upper part of the village, around the fortified tower, towards the Canigou ,is stupendous. The village webside, www.laroque-des-alberes.fr, is well-designed , and several useful brochures are available in English.
How to get there

- Air France flies from Paris-Orly Airport direct to Perpignan and there are several flights a day. - If you land at Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport, you can: - either take the Air France shuttle to Orly (allow 2 -3 hours for transfer) - or take the TGV (high-speed train) straight from CDG Airport to Perpignan. It will get you there in about 6 hours. There is no need to go into central Paris.
