Les Pleiades
About the home
The house was built in the outer fortifications and although fully-renovated, still retains some historic architectural features such as a beautiful wooden staircase, thick walls, asymmetric rooms. The windows are large, the rooms are bright, and the roof patio is perfect for holidays meals or a nap in the shade. Bedrooms and main bathroom are all on the same floor.
There are many cultural delights in the area, fortified villages, Romanesque churches and old abbeys, all the Cathar fortresses are close by. The jewel of the Cote Vermeille, medieval Collioure, is only a short drive away. The Mediterranean beaches are 10 km from Laroque. The local wines deserve to be sampled.

It is furnished with a table, chairs and lounge chairs, ideal for breakfast and dinner in the summer. There is a small balcony outside the living-room. The garage is locked and secure, and can accommodate a fairly large car and bicycles. The access is quite straightforward, an unusual feature in an older village with narrow lanes.

- No smoking (even on roof patio, for safety reasons). There are public benches on village square, a couple of minutes from the house, and several cafés with leafy terraces nearby.
- We do love pets, but we cannot allow them in the house any more, since allergies are becoming more and more widespread..
- The house is not really suitable for toddlers or young children (wooden staircase, no garden, no playground) However, babies are welcome.
- Rental: 25 percent of rental due at time of booking to secure the reservation; the balance, two weeks before arrival (or on arrival for last-minute bookings).
Cancellation policy:
- If you cancel two weeks before your expected arrival date, the amount already paid will be fully reimbursed.
- if you cancel less than two weeks before your expected arrival date, or after forwarding the balance, you will be reimbursed 75 per cent of the amount that you have already paid.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

The region is at the foot of the Pyrenees and enjoys a dry and sunny climate for most of the year. Spring and autumn are wonderful times to explore the area. Spring flowers and autumn leaves are enchanting, and the temperature is often ideal for walking or sightseeing. These two seasons are becoming very popular among our visitors, particularly May and September.
The scenery is extremely varied: endless beaches, rocky coast and high cliffs, vineyards, fruit and vegetable farms, horse-riding stables, wooded hills and mountains, historic villages, serious mountain ranges complete with ski resorts and thermal springs and spas.
The Mont Canigou (3000 m) is only an hour's easy drive from the sea. The cities of Perpignan and Narbonne are culturally-vibrant, picturesque, and friendly. One of our favourite "things to do" is a visit to the Saturday morning market in the nearby village of Céret, which also owns a well-known modern art public gallery. and several lovely craftshops.
The Laroque des Alberes area
Laroque des Alberes is a charming village which has retained the main tower of the old castle. The village grew up in a circle around the first fortifications. It is close to the sea (12 km), and the mountains rise up right behind it. The area is a walker's paradise. Cycling is also an excellent way to explore the area, which boasts a large number of small and winding roads .New cycle paths have been recently added to the existing network, along the coast (40 km), and from Argelès to Le Boulou (20 km).
The tourist office (Maison de la Randonnée) is staffed by knowledgeable and friendly people. Most of the cultural activities take place in the spring and summer, beginning with the St. John's Festival (and public barbecue) on June 24th, as well as during the Christmas season.
Shops and services can be found around the village square: two excellent bakeries, a butcher shop, a small grocery, a newsagent, the tourist office, a pharmacy, an ATM and the post-office. There are several good restaurants in or around. the village. A miniature shopping mall (with a well-stocked supermaket , an excellent bakery-cum-café-, and a good bicycle shop) is only 2 km away from the village centre.. A car is advised, for sightseeing and exploring the area, but not absolutely necessary if one comes to relax, enjoy village life, write, or walk the hills.
The view from the upper part of the village, around the fortified tower, towards the Canigou ,is stupendous.
The village webside, www.laroque-des-alberes.fr, is well-designed , and several useful brochures are available in English.

Les Pleiades is a beautifully renovated period village house in the atmospheric Catalan village of Laroque des Alberes. Marie Luce has decorated it in an Art Deco style, and says the renovation is on-going. It is extremely well equipped, with more than enough room for one or two couples. The area is a walker's paradise, but is close to beaches and to towns and cities for sight-seeing. We stayed a month and could have stayed for ever! |
