The Largs area
Largs has everything you would expect in a traditional Scottish seaside resort, such as a Victorian promenade and ice cream parlours. It is a good base for exploring the many west coast islands including Great Cumbrae, just a mile offshore. There is a regular ferry service to the islands and the famous Waverley Paddle Steamer makes regular trips from Largs during the summer months. Largs is located about a 40 minute drive away from Glasgow, or a pleasant 1 hours train journey. The town is famed for a battle in 1263 when the Vikings, attempting to land from a fleet of longboats, were repulsed by the army of Alexander III. This Viking heritage is celebrated at Vikingar! - a multi-media Viking-themed attraction. If this isn't enough, there are two golf courses, putting, bowls, play parks, fishing, diving, a swimming pool and many other sport and leisure activities. The horseshoe shape of Largs Bay, and Great Cumbrae, has made the resort a popular sailing base with anchorage for all craft. Largs is also well known for its connections to Brisbane, Australia. Sir Thomas Brisbane, whom the city Brisbane in Queensland Australia was named after, resided and died in Largs. The word 'Brisbane' is used throughout the town both in the Brisbane Glen, to local businesses such as Brisbane House Hotel and Brisbane Taxis, to the annual festival celebrating the link between the countries which is called the Brisbane Queen Festival and takes place in July each year. Golf is a very popular sport locally and Largs has 2 golf courses to offer golfers. Vikingar! is located on Greenock Road, across from the seafront, towards the north end of the Prom. The main attraction is the Viking Experience, which has interactive exhibits with storytellers telling Viking tales and myths, and a 20 minute film about Vikings. In addition to the Viking Experience, Vikingar! also has a swimming pool, suana, steam room and gym. Largs is perhaps most famous for its Viking links - solidified in history by virtue of the Pencil monument and celebrated annually with the Largs Viking Festival which runs in September. A secret forest, a crocodile swamp and an amazing adventure course makes Kelburn Castle and Country Centre one of Scotland's most thrilling days out for kids.Based around a 13th Century castle that's had an amazing makeover courtesy of a team of Brazilian artists, the estate near Largs, Ayrshire also features pony-trekking and a fabulous pets' corner for the little ones. But there's plenty to keep the adults occupied too, with dramatic walks, breathtaking gardens and many features of historical interest. The Kelburn Glen with its waterfalls and deep gorges is regarded as one of Scotland’s most beautiful woodlands and leads to spectacular views over the islands of the Firth of Clyde.
