The Kyrenia District
*** “Northern Cyprus - sophisticated, charming and a place where tourism exists, but doesn't yet dominate its unique landscape”. BBC Holiday. ***
One of the last unspoiled corners of the Mediterranean, Northern Cyprus offers not only spectacular countryside, miles of deserted beaches but also a traditional warm welcome. Unlike many other areas of the Mediterranean, Northern Cyprus is most definitely the ‘best kept secret’ of the Mediterranean.
The country is scenically stunning ranging from the sand dunes of the Karpaz ‘Pan Handle’ to the impressive Kyrenia mountain range.
Cyprus has been fought over by the Ancient Greeks, Venetians, Egyptians, Romans, the Ottomans and the British which means there are plenty of historical sites to explore.
Cyprus registers itself as the sunniest island in the Mediterranean with over 300 day’s sunshine a year, a sea temperature that hardly ever drops below 16°C and Spring arriving in February, so is ideally suited to those who prefer the finer weather outdoor pursuits such as golf. A good antidote to the British winter!
The people are incredibly friendly, and due to the legacies of the British colonial era, English is widely spoken, even in the remotest areas. They even drive on the left. Splendid!!
Lapta area
In a spectacular setting amid a backdrop of outstanding beauty, The Pines was completed in 2006 and was one of the first of its kind in Northern Cyprus.
Golf lovers will be delighted to learn that North Cyprus is just about to open its first golf course. The Esentepe Golf and Country Club is not just the first 18 hole golf course in North Cyprus, but a truly international course designed to the highest standards.
The course covers some 6600 yards with elegant greens, tricky sand bunkers and water hazards, set amongst olive trees and with the natural beauty of the Northern Cyprus Kyrenia Mountains as a stunning backdrop. You can also practice your swing at the 30 bay driving range, or brush up of your skills with the help of a qualified instructor at the golf academy.
Golf 'widows' will be as equally delighted knowing just five minutes drive away in Karsiyaka, a brand new five star health resort and spa has only just opened, offering a wide range of treatments and exclusive five star dining. For a true pampering session, its a must!
Golf 'orphans' will be overjoyed when they hear about the brand new water park just a two minute drive away, the excellent water slides at the Acapulco Beach Hotel and Riverside Holiday complex. As a non-resident, you pay a small fee per person and the facilities are yours. Happy days!!
For the more adventurous, the Hotel Sempati (just a short walk away) can offer short courses in underwater diving and snorkelling.
If all that exercise (or relaxation) makes you hungry, you can dine at one of the many restaurants the area has to offer, some of which offer exclusive five star dining, or sip a cooling drink in one of the many beautiful bars. Just a small distance away is Vaha Spa, offering a truly indulgent spa experience and excellent food!
Kyrenia Castle houses the oldest shipwreck in the world and was also where Richard the Lionheart, on his way from England to the Crusades, spent his honeymoon with Queen Berengaria in 1191.
There's also the peaceful little hillside village of Bellapais, just outside Kyrenia, where you'll find the Tree of Idleness immortalised in the Lawrence Durrell novel Bitter Lemons. Go there in the evening, when the ruins of the 12th Century abbey are lit up, and treat yourself to a brandy sour (brandy, lemon juice and soda water) as you listen to piped classical music and drink in the atmosphere at the same time.
Where ever you are, you always have the benefit of fantastic sea views and the dramatic backdrop of the Besparmak mountain range.

Should you wish to travel with more people and stay on the same development, the owners are able to make arrangements to accommodate them.
Excellent flight information can be found by looking at www.skyscanner.co.uk. I would also recommend booking a one-way ticket to Cyprus and a one-way ticket back home. This is a cheaper way of travelling...see for yourself on www.flythomascook.com.

Lovely clean apartment with everything we needed during our stay. We spent most of our time with builders and are hoping it all works out as well as Lyndsey's purchase of this beautiful apartment. Tim, Trisha & Nathan - November 2007
We greatly enjoyed our stay in your apartment. The weather has been fabulous all week and we have used the pool here every day. We love it and are almost the sole users! Ruth, Chris, Saul & Ethan - October 2007
Have had a wonderful two weeks - weather fabulous. Apartment great - everything in it we needed. Pool great even for a non-swimmer. We never went to any one place, just tried everywhere. All we can say is that our stay has been one adventure after another, and the memories we will take with us are such that will last a lifetime.
