Farmhouse | 5 bedrooms | sleeps 10
This recently renovated farmhouse is a haven of calm and tranquillity, so the perfect base for a relaxing rural holiday. It is also close enough to the Pyrenees for skiing or high altitude walks in the winter, plus easy access to all that the Ariege region has to offer all year round. The small hamlet of Cap Sec only has two other properties, and rests in the foothills of the Pyrenees, located halfway between the medieval market towns of Mirepoix and Pamiers. The house is full of character with generous rooms, traditional deep stone walls, which keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Cap Sec has been traditionally furnished with comfort and relaxation in mind, but is also fully equipped with the latest appliances. The lounge with its massive fireplace, exposed stone walls and beams, has relaxed seating for at least 12 people in leather sofas and armchairs. There are 4 double bedrooms with memory foam mattresses, one ensuite and a spacious family bathroom with a full size bath and rainfall shower. The second floor has a massive grenier converted into a dormitory at one end with a chill-out room with games & sofas at the other. The garden has a 4x8m in-ground pool with a summer kitchen, BBQ and large shaded outdoor eating area under an old oak tree.
A couple of minutes walk up the farm track takes you to a picnic spot with amazing 360 degree panoramic views of the Pyrenees mountain range and rolling hills of the Ariege, an area of outstanding natural beauty, abundant in wildlife and surrounded by forests, mountains and rivers.

There are two 18 hole golf courses with fantastic mountain panoramic views plus cheap green fees all within an hours drive. Golf Club de la Ariege is 45 minutes away at La Bastide de Serou, 18 holes open to non-members. The mediterranean coast is around 90 minutes with the Cathar region and all it's history stretching from just south of us, right up to the historic coastal town of Coullioure. In winter skiing in the Pyrenees is just 50 minutes away, and there are around a dozen resorts within 90 minutes travel.
Our local town (just 10 mins drive) is Mirepoix with its Medieval town square and an impressive collection of quality restaurants, cafés, shops plus a lively market on a Monday with fantastic local artisan produce. Alternatively, the larger town of Pamiers has a number of good restaurants and facilities such as large indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a commercial centre. Bread, croissants etc can be bought at the nearby village of Rieucros.

My family & I can't recommend CAPSEC enough ..... if you need to get away from a busy life this is the place to unwind. As soon as we stepped through the front door into the kitchen we were 'wowwed' by the warm, welcoming kitchen.
Capsec is set 350m up in the foothills of the Pyrenees - which you can see in all their majesty from just a short walk up the hill. You are surrounded by nothing but mother nature - we had the cows passing us in the fields & the only noises were our childrens laughter & a gentle wind rustling through the hay fields.
And the local food! Magnifique! The cheeses, hams & fois gras from Monday's market in Mirepois were exceptional. In the evening the timbered frame square is great to go for a drink or eat out in one of the restaurants. And then there is the local bakery at Rieucros a couple of miles down the road, where we went to get our bread & croissants for breakfast every morning - we became firm friends with the lady there!
'Capsec' is the perfect amalgamation of a typical Arigeois farmhouse combined with modern, state of the art wi-fi & facilities. The owners have tastefully decorated and furnished in the local style but all appliances are modern & were plentiful for our young family of 4 & our friend's family of 5.
There are 4 double bedrooms plus a "grenier" in the roof where the kids slept, played games & just sat around & chilled in the "snug" part. Three showers were ample for both families, & the huge hot water tank meant it never ran cold. The bathrooms were rusticly decorated but all were modern & everything was exceptionally clean. We particularly loved the living room where late into the night we cosied into the ample settees & could watch dvd's or log our ipads into the wifi.
The pool was fantastic & the kids just played in there all day long. Beside it is a quaint Summer kitchen with a bbq & all the utensils you need to have a great grill. We sat at the huge dining table, set out in the open under a huge oak, & kicked back, watching the sun set on the far side of the pool. Wonderful!
Additionally we had fantastic day trips to Carcassonne, Foix, the beach at Narbonne, Ax, Montsegur, Prehistoric caves, etc, and we were awed by the Cathar history, the Resistance & the natural beauty.
As for the admin bits; the lady owner was so helpful on the phone when we booked. We received clear directions & instructions on how to get the key. All the bedding was extremely clean (& there were spares) & we received our deposit back in very reasonable time.
If you want to forget about work for a week or two, Capsec is the place to be. We're definitely booking again for next Summer.
