The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Dordogne is lush and green but enjoys a lot of hot weather from June to September. Add to that a wealth of attractive towns and villages, tourist attractions of worldwide standing and countryside that is a joy to walk, cycle or even drive through and you have the perfect recipe for a relaxing and interesting summer holiday.

Lanouaille

In the north of the Dordogne, yet close to the Corrèze and the Limousin, Lanouaille and Payzac are thriving small communities set in beautiful wooded countryside that is run through with river valleys. Charming old villages can be found in and around those valleys offering a host of interesting local shops and good restaurants. If you head south, you are soon in the Dordogne heartland of major tourist attractions, but if you head north, you are soon in Limoges' porcelain area with bargains to be had at all and any of the manufacturers' shops. Just 15 minutes away is St. Yrieix with evening markets, many good but inexpensive restaurants, a fantastic chocolate shop and a wonderful patisserie that is open all day on Sundays!

"If you want complete peace and quiet with all mod cons then this is the place."

We decided to go to Les Jalons hoping for a very French holiday in a rural setting with lots of peace and quiet. Our experience far exceeded our expectations. Les Jalons is a delightful old farm house in its own large grounds. The property is very well equipped and it is maintained to a very high standard. It is located in a hamlet surrounded by walnut and apple orchards, fields with donkeys and horses, plus lots of trees. The elevated position gives views of the surrounding countryside and a sense of absolute peace. We were surprised to find that quite nearby is a large lake with an artificial beach complete with lifeguard. We had a swim and it was excellent. On another section of this huge lake was something I think they call a teleski where people, mainly young people, are towed around on a continuous cable. Very interesting to watch but we didn't have a go.

We visited lots of towns and villages in the area which were very enjoyable. The cave complex in Tourtirac was amazing and not to be missed, the best we had ever been to. The location of the property in its rural setting, whilst a big plus also means that there are no facilities in the hamlet itself so a car is essential and you do need to give a bit of advance thought to what you are going to eat and, perhaps more importantly, what you are going to drink, if you want to avoid unnecessary journeys to neighbouring towns, though it is only 5 minutes to the closest local supermarket in the car. We loved the peace, quiet and tranquillity of Les Jalons and we will definitely return.
