The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
The Perigord Vert is an area of outstanding natural beauty and has many fairytale chateaux, medieval villages and prehistoric caves. The area is also famous for its cuisine, truffles and foie gras. The historic centres of Sarlat, Domme, Limoges, Périgueux, Beynac and Brantome are all within an hour's drive..
The remarkable caves at Lascaux with their prehistoric paintings are within reasonable driving distance and whilst the original cave system is closed to the public, the replica, Lascaux 2, is a very busy tourist attraction. It is worth planning a visit to Lascaux in advance as tickets are not available onsite: they have to be purchased at the tourist centre in Montignac.
Near Lascaux is the medieval town of Sarlat, it is perfectly restored and a delight to wander around its narrow streets and alleys. Sarlat has a magnificent market on Saturdays.
Beynac and Rocamadour are beautiful examples of towns built into the cliff faces overlooking the Dordogne and are of course great attractions. Driving along the winding roads around Rocamadour is not for the faint-hearted!
The countryside around Payzac is full of beautiful and historic villages, chateaux appear on almost every hill, two of the finest are at Jumilhac le Grande and Hautfort, both giving guided tours in English. Nearby St Jean de Cole is a past 'prettiest village in France'. Brantome is known as 'Perigord's Venice' and is a genuine 'must see'. It is celebrated by visitors and archeologists alike for its museum of prehistory, prehistorical and megalithical sites, and troglodyte houses carved into cliff faces. Its belfry is said to be the oldest in France and its Benedictine abbey was founded by Charlemagne.
There are many other superb small villages - La Chapelle Faucher with a magnificent castle, Saint Pierre de Cole with the remains of Bruzac Castle and the church of Saint Romain. In Villars you will find Puyguilhem castle, Villars cave, and the 12th century Boshaud Abbey.
In the village of Sorges, the Maison de la Truffe (Truffle House) has guided tours of the Truffières Path and the Ecomusée de la Truffe (Truffle Ecomuseum) and offers a fascinating glimpse into the mysteries of truffle cultivation. Thiviers, a former feudal city built around its castles and church, is the region's commercial and agricultural centre. Gourmet lovers everywhere are attracted to its Goose and Duck museum and the Maison du foie gras (foie gras house).
Périgueux, Perigord's capital, has all the shops and services you expect of a modern town, whilst retaining it's ancient houses, squares and alleyways.
Lanouaille / Payzac area
Payzac is a small rural village with all the basic facilities, a bank with cashpoint, a hotel and good restaurant, baker, butcher, two bars, an off licence, tabac and a fully stocked supermarket. And a very big church.
Two local lakes offer boating and sandy beaches. A local campsite offers a range of lake fishing.
