The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Visit the ancient city of Limoges and the Musée de l'Evéché, which presents one of the largest collections of world-famous enamels. The Museum also boats a wide range of Impressionist paintings by Renoir, who was born in Limoges. Nearby - discover the Resistance Museum which shows the history of Limoges during the Second World War.
Nearby is One of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France" – the medieval village of Ségur le Château. The noble houses are dominated by the ruins of the castle. The small town of Pompadour is also worth a visit – with its magnificent chateaux – a gift to the mistress of Louis XV – Madame de Pompadour. Pompadour is also the capital of the Anglo-Arab horse. You can visit the chateau terraces and hippodrome. Flat and steeplechase races are held from June to September and the national traditional carriage driving competition is held on the last weekend in August.
Lanouaille / Payzac area
Although outstandingly beautiful, this area of the Dordogne is relatively undiscovered and you will find the local people extremely friendly and helpful.
The barn is situated on the edge of 3 departments - the Dordogne, Haute Vienne and Correze. The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful and unspoilt with rolling hills and valleys, old stone cottages, many rivers and lakes to explore and most famously - the wonderful restaurants boasting dishes of truffles and foie gras. It's almost like stepping back in time.
The pace of life is slow and relaxed and the medieval villages and landscape look the same as they did many centuries ago. Nearby (5km) is the ancient Forge and Chateau at Savignac Ledrier. The setting is magnificent with the weir and the backdrop of the fairytale chateau. Here you can picnic and stroll along the river and not see another person in sight. If you enjoy French cuisine, sightseeing, birdwatching, fishing and taking long nature walks then this is the place for you.
