The Dordogne region
There is something for everyone in the Dordogne from activity holidays for the energetic, to taking in the beautiful unspoilt countryside. There are charming villages to see (Brantome, Segur le Chateau, Hautefort, Beynac, Domme - to name but a few) and the area is steeped in history with plenty of castles and chateaus. Also of interest is the famous Lascaux caves at Montignac.
There is delicious Perigord food to sample (confit de canard, truffles, foie gras) and there are plenty of restaurants in the region offering 4 course meals for as little as 18 euros.
Payzac is situated in the stunning countryside of the Perigord Vert region of the Dordogne. 5km away is one of the most popular leisure lakes in the region. At Base de Loisirs de Rouffiac you can enjoy swimming, fishing, canoeing, walking, sailing and water skiing.
Just 15 minutes away is one of the prettiest villages in France - the medieval village of Segur le Chateau, route of Richard the Lionheart. During July and August there is the weekly farmers market where you can buy local produce and while its cooked you can enjoy a glass of wine and listen to live music. If you enjoy walking there are plenty of walks at Segur or Savignac Ledrier is just 7km away, where you will find the ancient forge that was powered by water and also a medieval chateau . Here you can take a riverside picnic or you can walk up to the Forge restaurant in the village for refreshments or sample some of the region's speciality dishes.
Just 40 minutes away is Brantome which has a fine selection of restaurants, you can also hire a canoe , take a boat ride along the river or visit the troglodyte caves.

"Lovely authentic French village house"
This lovely house is right in the centre of the village of Payzac - literally a minute from the boulangerie! Location-wise we couldn't have asked for more, the village has everything you need in terms of shops, including a supermarket. There is plenty to do and see in the area from chateaus to leisure lakes and the countryside is stunning.
We were left completely to our own devices which suited us perfectly although there was a contact number for the caretaker if required (which it wasn't). The owners themselves were extremely helpful, the booking process easy and efficient, as was the refund of the deposit once we returned.
The house itself was comfortable, warm (weather wasn't great while we were there) but I imagine would be cool in the summer. The kitchen was well equipped and the showers powerful. The beds had quality mattresses.
We didn't use the garden much but there was a shady terrace for outside dining and garden furniture and a beautiful view.
If you want a holiday in a gite that has all bright and shiny new appliances, huge TV etc etc then this probably isn't for you but if you want the genuine French country village experience then pick this one!

"Lovely location and wonderful views, everything you need to make a relaxing holiday"
The holiday home is located in a lovely quiet village, with everything on hand. We took advantage of the bikes and there are plenty of walks close by. We particularly enjoyed relaxing and enjoying the views of the countryside from the terrace. There are plenty of sites to see and my great nephew loved the days we spent at Lake Rouffiac.
