The Midi-Pyrenees / Hautes-Pyrenees region

The Haute-Pyrenees region:
Winter: From January onwards there are beautiful crisp, sunny winter days with temperatures rising as high as 20 degrees. It can drop to -5 on rare occasions but November and December can still see bright sunny days with clear blue skies.

The snow on the mountain peaks can arrive from October onwards with skiing available generally from the end of November. Our nearest ski stations are at Val du Louron a 45 minute drive (ideal for beginners/intermediates and families), Peyragudes also a 45 minute drive offering a larger ski area but also suitable for beginners/intermediates and the more advanced. Good facilities here for snowboarders too. A little further afield are the ski stations of Piau Engaly or over the border into Spain to the resort of Baqueire.Cross country skiing is available at Nistos and at Payolle (depending on the snow conditions). There are also opportunities for snow shoeing and for dog sledding.

In Spring the air is clear and it can still be very warm (even hot on occasions) and the meadows and mountain pastures are adorned with a rich tapestry of alpine plants and flowers. We do get a few showers in March and April and possibly into May but these are interspersed with lots of sunshine and warm days.

In Summer time the temperatures can rise quite dramatically to the mid twenties and beyond. The long days are excellent for sightseeing, shopping or passing a lazy day in one of our local spas. Spectacular electric storms can occur at any time of year but these are short lived and followed by bright sunshine.
Autumn is a beautiful season too when the wooded valleys and hillsides are a blaze of colour. Temperatures can be mild too and the days are still long. This is mushroom and chestnut picking time, a lovely season for photography and long walks.
There is no exotic nightlife but we do have air that is pure, roads that are uncongested and night skies filled with stars.

Lannemezan area

Our nearest town is 5 minutes by car offering a wide range of shops, restaurants, cafes and supermarkets. Wednesday is market day when the town is full of stalls and people flocking in from the nearby villages.
La Barthe de Neste
There is a bustling Sunday market in our local village which is a good walk or 5mins by car. There are bakers, butchers, chocolatier, small supermarket, bars and restaurants, post office, pharmacy, tourist information office, florist.
The Baronnies, This area close to us is a typical rural, pastoral landscape dominated by Chateau Mauvezin, worth a visit for the view on a good day. It has lovely rolling countryside and picture postcard views, and is only ten minutes away. This is the setting for Tony Hawk's delightful novel, "A Piano in the Pyrenees". Several other books by different authors are also available about the area. The high mountain peaks of the Pyrenees are also visible and these mountains look different every day, depending on the weather! There is an amazing variety of wildlife: red kites, eagles and vultures, marmot, izard, wild boar and deer, even the occasional bear in the high mountains! A little further on you will find Bonnemazon with its stunning Cistercian abbey “Escaladieu”.
Worth a visit are sites of international importance such as Lourdes, the great pilgrimage centre (it celebrates its 150th anniversary this year), the Cirque de Gavarnie, a world heritage site with Europe's highest waterfall and the National Park of the Pyrenees at Pont d'Espagne.
There are many fine golf courses, with the oldest golf course in mainland Europe at Pau and the most beautiful at Bagnere de Bigorre. The lovely course at Lannemezan is also worth a visit where there are in the region of 4,000 trees to avoid! There is a lovely restaurant here too with view to the Pic du Midi from its terrace.

Capvern-Les-Bains with its spa. Arreau. A picture-postcard village with castles, church, birds of prey in flight and lovely walks. Campan with its street exhibition in summer of life-size rag dolls called ‘mounaques’ made by local residents. Nestes. A series of unspoilt landscapes ranging from the Nistos and Comminges valleys and the deep secluded Barousse valley to the high mountains of Luchon, and the Aure and Louron valleys.
La Route des Cols
Crossing the High Pyrenees via the peaks and a succession of passes and staggering climbs and descents, rewarded by some unique panoramic views across the entire chain. Col d’Aubisque, col du Soulor, col du Tourmalet, col d’Aspin, col d’Azet/Louron, col de Peyresourde.
Nestes-Nistos-Barousse

Guestbook

Just a note to say thank you very much for making us so welcome in your home. We both really enjoyed the stay and the company. We thought you had a lovely house and the views were amazing.
Pete & Janet July 2008

Thank you Peter and Hazel for accommodating us at short notice and for the great hospitality. We were late arriving, an hour behind getting up and had no plans. How spoilt we were, a cuppa outside the door, printed recommendations for the day and good company on our return. We had a fab time and even made it to the beach on our way home. July 2008

Thanks very much to you both for making our stay so very welcoming. I think it fair to say that we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Ian, Ted, Mark, Martin, Sept 2008
