The Isle of Purbeck region

Dorset boasts coastal resorts with safe sandy beaches, a uniquely unspoiled coastline, breath taking country landscapes, traditional market towns and villages. The mild climate also serves gardens well and many of the manor homes, for which Dorset is famed, have magnificent gardens. Panoramic views of the Dorset landscapes are best enjoyed from atop one of the many ancient pre - historic hillforts and barrows. This area is also great for shoppers looking for excellent local produce, handcrafted goods or designer brands that are often located in one of the many shopping preccints.

Swanage is situated in the Isle of Purbeck ( a coastal peninsula) which lies on the south-eastern coast of Dorset which is one of England's most unspoiled coastal and rural landscapes and yet is easily accessible so is perfect for year - round holidays and short breaks.

Langton Matravers

Langton Matravers/ Swanage are in the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Jurassic Coast. The South West Coast Path takes its course along the whole coastline in the area. WIth sandy beaches such as Studland Beach and Swanage Bay and coves such as Lulworth and Kimmeridge , it's a perfect place for the whole family to enjoy the mild climate. Swanage has much to enjoy: the town has kept much of its original Victorian character with a wide variety of all- weather activities. Swanage's safe sandy beach offers amongst other things board sailing, water skiing, "banana" rides, scuba diving and a traditional Punch and Judy show. The Steam Railway, run by enthusiasts, links Swanage with Corfe Castle and Norden and occasionally Thomas the Tank Engine and the Fat Controller visit.

.

At the end of May beginning of June the Purbeck Art week takes place with open studios, concerts, films and lectures in both Swanage and many of the villages in the area. In the early July of each year the Jazz Festival takes place, along with the Carnival and Regatta Week at the end of July/ beginning of August and the Folk Festival in September. The New Year street celebrations in Swanage are rumoured to be the best in the country outside Trafalgar Square and Scotland.

This relatively unspoilt area has all the attractions required by the modern family within easy reach. Durlston Country Park is one of the places in Britain to see Bottle Nosed Dolphins. Occasionally seals and pilot whales can also be spotted from the cliffs. Monkey World is the UK's primary ape sanctuary and plays a key role in rescuing various apes from captivity around the world. Close by, in Bovington, is the Tank Museum as well as Clouds Hill, Lawrence of Arabia's home.

There are three golf clubs within easy reach with some of the best views and courses in the country. Sports and activities are widely available .

Langton Matravers has a well stocked and friendly grocery store that also acts as Post Office. It stocks everything you could need for a self catering holiday. The village has 2 traditional and pleasant village pubs. There is also a wonderful Petting Farm and kids' play centre 3 minutes walk from the cottage with lots of animals that children can touch and baby goats and lambs to bottle feed (subject to season). There are plenty of great restaurants and coffee shops in Swanage and in all the adjoining villages. Specific recommendations will be provided after booking.

Purbeck is the best of Dorset - fantastic views across the hills, the best bucket and spade beach at Swanage and the fantastic Corfe Castle. And the best way to see it is on the award winning buses the Purbeck Breezers.

Route 50 starts its run off at Bournemouth Station, passes through the town centre and the Westcliff hotel district. Soon after the views just keep coming, Branksome Chine, Sandbanks, over the ferry to Studland, before dropping into Swanage and along the sea front to Swanage bus station. In summer it passes the queues at the ferry so it is also one of the quickest onto the Isle of Purbeck.

Of course, to get the best views most journeys on route 50 are run with open tops – so bring the sun lotion and hold on to your hat!

The inland route from Poole is the 40. After leaving Poole and passing through Wareham and Corfe Castle, the bus climbs up Kingston Hill giving the best views of the Purbeck Hills, through Langton Matravers before coming into Swanage.

A favourite day out is to do a full loop around Poole Harbour using the 50 from Bournemouth to Swanage, then on to the 40 to Poole and finish the loop by using the ultra-high frequency more route to back Bournemouth.

The English National Concessionary Passes be used on Purbeck Breezer except before 0930 on weekdays.
