Park Farm, Somerton, Somerset
Farmhouse | 5 bedrooms | sleeps 12
Park Farm is a charming Grade II listed 17th Century Farmhouse of enormous character set in a hillside location with magnificent views across the Somerset Levels. Until recently we lived in the house ourselves having brought this interesting and beautiful old farmhouse up to a very high standard. It now offers comfortable and stylish accommodation for up to 12 people. Elegant furnishings add to the sense of staying in a private home and you will find interesting books and paintings on the walls.
Downstairs: Front door and flagstone hallway linking front and back doors with step down into charming Homes and Gardens style farmhouse kitchen (the hub of the house) with bespoke cream painted kitchen cabinets and lovely Swedish style furniture including ladder back, rush kitchen chairs and pine topped cream kitchen table and glass fronted corner cabinet. There is an electric AGA, electric induction hob hot plate, American Fridge Freezer, Neff dishwasher, microwave, food processor and scales, filter coffee maker, toaster and everything you could wish to prepare a feast! This opens into the breakfast area with farmhouse kitchen table and chairs and which overlooks the back lawns and woods beyond. Off the kitchen is a flagstone floored Boot/Utility room with washing machine, sink for rinsing things out or cleaning wells and a downstairs loo. A step up from the kitchen you find yourself in a charming beamed Sitting room with flagstones, exotic rugs, comfy sofas, log burner in inglenook, antiques + Ipod dock for music. This leads into an elegant dining room with beams, oak dining furniture, inglenook fireplace with log burner - ideal for larger dinner or lunch parties. There is a further spacious sitting room/library with TV, log burner and sumptious Italian leather sofas! There is also a TV room with 42" flatscreen TV, DVD and an excellent choice of films and books as well as toys, puzzles and games for youngsters!
Stairgates on upstairs stairs to prevent little ones tumbling.
The Bedroom situation: Old fashioned landing at the end of which you will find a spectacular and very large Master Suite with super kingsize bed and huge ensuite bathroom (walk in shower and dressing room and masses of hanging space and room for at least 50 pairs of shoes!) Second Kingsize bedroom with ensuite bathroom (beams in walls). Two further doubles sharing the family bathroom on the first floor. On the second floor you will find a charming beamed and oak floored ATTIC bedroom with Queensize bed plus twin single beds. *Please note this room sleeps four in the SAME room. Travel Cot available for babies.
*PARK FARM OFFERS SPACE AND FLEXIBILITY WITH ITS THREE GENEROUS SITTING ROOMS AND A DINING ROOM UNLIKE SOME HOLIDAY PROPERTIES WHERE YOU HAVE THE TV IN THE ONLY SITTING ROOM. HERE, YOU HAVE THE CHOICE OF EATING IN THE DINING ROOM OR IN THE KITCHEN. OUR AIM IS TO GIVE OUR GUESTS MAXIMUM SPACE TO BE TOGETHER WHILST OFFERING THE THE OPPORTUNITY OF FINDING A QUIET CORNER IF THEY WISH AND IN PARTICULAR, ALLOWS CHILDREN TO PLAY OR WATCH TV CLOSE TO THE ACTION BUT IN THEIR OWN ZONE.
The house is set in 40 acres of its own grounds of fields and private woodland in which guests may roam freely. There is a croquet lawn with a Jacques croquet set and a private tennis court with rackets and balls for your use. There are swings within view of the kitchen windows and go karts for the kids, buckets and spades on loan for the beach (Lyme Regis 45 mins or similar to Weston Super Mare) and we can help you as little or as much as you wish with suggestions for days out ie Wookey Hole about 40 mins away or Wells Cathedral around 30 mins drive! The West Country region
Park Farm is close to Somerton (around 5 mins by car) and 7 mins drive from Langport with its leisure centre and outdoor heated pool. You can book a game of squash at the Huish Sports Centre. Langport boasts two butchers, a greengrocer, a Tesco supermarket, petrol, gift shops, bakeries and a local doctors. You can eat excellent Thai and Indian food or order an Indian take-away. There are some lovely river walks and indeed bicycle ride opportunities in and around Langport which is really at the heart of the Somerset Levels. Most supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda (plus Ocado) will home deliver to save you a shopping trip! The Somerset Levels is an area famous for its early inhabitants who lived harsh lives on a group of islands which they reached by dug out canoes. These ancient islands are now the villages of Othery, Middlezoy and Westonzoyland. The region is famous for its withy growing and a visit to the Willows and Wetlands Centre at Stoke St Gregory is well worth a visit for a very concise explanation on the history of the area. You can also purchase hand crafted baskets of all shapes and sizes!
Nearby Somerton is a charming country town with a wonderful atmosphere and is famous as the alleged ancient capital of Wessex. Here you will find a supermarket, hairdressers, pubs and a good selection of coffee shops and gift shops. The newly refurbished White Hart has just reopened under new management offering first class food and wine in a very smart setting. There is a charming town square with an ancient Butter cross and the town has some interesting architectural buildings.
The climate in our area is generally milder than the North. In the thick of winter, the log burners downstairs together with excellent central heating throughout and the limitless supply of logs to which are welcome, offer a wonderfully cosy house in which you can really enjoy a comfortable and peaceful stay with either family or friends. In the summer, you can sit out on one of the terraces around the table and take in the absolute peace and tranquility all around. The location is truly stunning with pastoral views all around and woodlands behind. There are comfortable garden chairs and benches on which to unwind and relax!
Park Farm is situated on a quiet country lane offering peace and quiet with magnificent pastoral views at the front and woodland behind the property. Somerset has much to offer and the house is only 15 minutes from Glastonbury with its ancient Abbey, Wells with its wonderful Cathedral, Lytes Cary which is a National Trust property and Muchelney Abbey from which pilgrims used to travel via Park Farm to Glastonbury Abbey. In those days you were offered a mug of mead or ale - hospitality remains an important part of Park Farm these days in a more luxurious form it must be said. Here people sleep deep, refreshing sleeps as the thick stone walls offer a great sense of peace and security to those within. The nearby towns of Somerton and Langport offer the convenience of supermarkets but also a wide range of restaurants and pubs. If you are feeling adventurous, you can walk through the private woods at the rear of the property and to the Halfway House Pub which is about half an hour on foot to sample a fine selection of real ales and local ciders. The Smokery at Hambridge is another popular lunch spot offering smoked eel, salmon and meats and delicious salads for relaxing lunches.
