The Northern England / Lancashire region
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes – the Lake District landscape has inspired several literary greats, including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Water, where you can cruise the lake on a steam-powered yacht soaking up the scenery in Victorian style, could be for you. Walking is one of the best ways of exploring the Lake District.
For the serious walker the mountains of Skiddaw, Scafell and Helvellyn provide enjoyable challenges, whilst at lower levels there are hundreds of routes wandering among the lakes and stone-walled fields. You can even choose a lake to suit your mood: if bustling lakeside towns and exhilarating watersports take your fancy, then Windermere and Coniston Water, where you can cruise the lake on a steam-powered yacht soaking up the scenery in Victorian style, could be for you.
If it’s peace and tranquility you seek then the secluded lakes of Buttermere and Wastwater are not to be missed. Yet Cumbria offers much more than the lakes alone. Explore the National Nature Reserve on Walney Island or visit the picturesque Duddon Valley, where the heather clad moors peppered with birch trees inspired many of Wordsworth’s poems.
With its award-winning gardens and the Lakeland Motor Museum, Holker Hall is also a great day out, whilst in northern Cumbria the peaceful villages of Caldbeck and Ireby offer a haven of solitude and picturesque tranquility. To the east lies the green and sheltered Eden Valley. Its dramatic landscape provides a range of activities including walking, cycling and watersports and is home to the Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre and Lowther Wildlife Park, perfect for a family day out
The Lancaster / Tatham area
High above the traditional Yorkshire market town of Bentham, the tiny hamlet of Tatham sits on the edge of Burnmoor overlooking The Great Stone of Fourstones – an Ice Age relic which marks the boundary between Lancashire and Yorkshire. This ancient monument has become a distinctive feature of the landscape boasting spectacular views over the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland - a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Excellent walking and cycling routes cross all three of these stunning areas, whilst nearby Bentham boasts a range of amenities and a good variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. The market towns of Settle, Kirkby Lonsdale, Skipton and Kendal are all within easy driving and are well worth visiting making this an exceptional destination no matter what time of year.

Guestbook for 1964 - Usherwoods Barn
Beautiful location and cottage. Very comfortable and the owners where very friendly and helpful. The whole family agreed this it was the best holiday accommodation we have stayed in and we are keen to book again. The children especially enjoyed feeding the wallabies. A lot of thought has gone into this property. It is an excellent conversion and holidaymakers are well catered for.

,The whole package makes your holiday very relaxing, feeding the wallabies and ducks, absolutely great for the kids, good for flying kites too and very safe. Lovely views, welcoming host, second time round so we must have enjoyed it. Would not hesitate to recommend, if you just want to chill out and relax it's for you.

,We found the property a lovely place to stay and we were extra fortunate to pick one of the best weeks for weather. The owners were very welcoming and helpful, without being intrusive. We can certainly recommend to other visitors.
