The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region
This region was one of the earliest to be inhabited by humans and, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean, was an extremely important trade route and passage.
The Roman history of Languedoc-Roussillon is long and has left some spectacular traces. The names of towns, the Catalan language, the region’s heady wines and olive-oil dishes all testify to the lasting influence of 400 years of occupation. It is also where the Romanesque art emerged in the early 11th C in its most impressive way ranging from little churches to large, important Cistercian abbeys.
This is also a region where the “Cathars”, named after the Greek “katharos” or “pure”, fought the Catholic church of the time in the 13th C; it took many decades to exterminate this movement whose followers believed the visible world to be the work of the devil. Nowadays, many impressive fortresses perched on dizzying heights and the ancient villages still bear witness to a lost religion.
The département of Hérault was created from the central part of the historic province of Languedoc. Its capital is the university city of Montpellier. The département has three arrondissements: Montpellier, Béziers, and Lodève.
This part of the Languedoc boasts a sunny Mediterranean climate with, they say, 300 days of sunshine per year. Summers can be hot but tempered by a breeze.
This is a land of contrasts between the gentle sandy coast with coastal lagoons, the more luscious plain of the river Aude where cherries, apricots and olives grow and where the Canal du Midi meanders serenely, and the rugged interior. A land of vineyards, wine and good food, perfumed garrigue, castles, abbeys, Cathar history, walks, rivers for fishing and swimming, colourful markets with fresh local produce and historic cities such as Roman Narbonne and Carcassonne with its remarkable medieval fortress – one of Europe’s best preserved wall cities.

Guestbook for Lamalou Maison de Maitre
"Found this house by chance as we needed a short term let for 10 people, not an easy thing to do in high season. It is situated in a lovely spa town with everything we could possible need, the market on Tuesday was especially good. As mentioned before, we found the property exceeded all expectations. Delightfully furnished, full of character and supplied with every comfort - even had dishwasher tablets and washing powder. The welcome pack of bread and wine helped us settle in and we enjoyed the games and reading material left for guests to use. Fabulous kitchen, lounge and garden. Bedrooms are spacious and very clean and comfortable, there are also plenty of toilets and bathrooms for a large group. Highly recommended place to stay within easy reach of the coast as well as some fascinating wine regions." Stephen, London
The house is exquisite and surprisingly central - think the current photographs do not do it justice! Its been immaculately maintained, full of space and character - even with 10 of us it did not feel crowded. Also, I think little expense has been spared on the furniture and décor and judging from the state of it, we felt good to be the some of the first people using it! We loved the town - very charming and more vibrant than we anticipated. A fantastic house in a wonderful part of the world - we will be back for a longer stay! Phil, family & friends. Manchester
