The Dordogne region

Couze et St Front lies on the Dordogne and smaller Couze rivers, in the heart of the picturesque region of the Dordogne.

This area is steeped in history, Couze itself has a fine tradition of handmade writing paper and there is a museum to visit in the village. There are many picturesque villages "Bastide" towns, chateaux, abbeys and churches.

all within an easy drive of Couze et St Front.

Activities include Kayaking on the Dordogne and Vesere rivers, greatly enjoyed by all the families who have a day out with a picnic on the rivers. Cycling and walking are both great activities in this area, there is a swimming lake at Lanquais just five kilometres up the road with the Chateau de Lanquais close by.

Sarlat to the east is a stunning town and the drive up the River Dordogne passes through beautiful villages all well worth exploring. There is a pebbly beach at Limieul where the Vesere and Dordogne rivers meet, lovely for taking a picnic, having a paddle or swim in the river, or sitting at the riverside bar watching the world go by.

Up the Vesere through the town of Le Bugue and onto "Les Eyzies" where the village is built into the rock there is a museum featuring the evidence of prehistoric man and their existence throughout this area.

There are also many caves with underground lakes and cave drawings, great on a very hot day!

The coast around Arcachon is well worth a visit, including the Dunes of Pyla which are the largest dunes in Europe and really are quite spectacular. This would be a full day out being a fair distance but well worth the journey.

Couze itself has restaurants, a bar and several small shops including a bakery and chemist so there really is no need to drive every day. Some holiday makers are happy to come without a car and hire bikes and also use the local trains for a day out to Sarlat or in the other direction Bergerac, St Emilion, Bordeaux and even on to the coast.

Couze also has a fortnightly evening market where there are trestle tables set up, food and wine from local producers to enjoy with a band or disco playing music to dance the night away!

The pretty market town of Lalinde is about a 45 minute walk along the canal towpath. Lalinde has many more shops, bars and restaurants, and a very busy street market every Thursday morning.

By car there are many villages with markets different days of the week, and also "vide greniers" (car boots) and brocantes every weekend and bank holiday in one village or another.

Or just stay on the lovely campsite and relax by the pool all day, have a barbeque at the mobile in the evening and just unwind!
