About this location
The Andalucia region
Axarquia, the area east of Malaga, bordered by the Mediteranean on the south and mountains sheltering the area to the north, enjoys the best climate in Europe. It is much less developed than the area east of Malaga, and has retained its charm, with traditional white-washed villages dotted about a spectacular mountain countryside. This unspoiled area of Andalusia is untouched by mass tourism and a perfect location to explore some of the nearby beaches stretching along the whole of the coast, the resort towns of Nerja and Torre del Mar and the towns of Malaga, Granada, Cordoba and Antequera.
Lake Viñuela lies in the heart of the Axarquia region, and boasts some of Andalusia most spectacular scenery. No motorised craft are allowed on the lake but you can enjoy sailing boats and canoes. Scattered around the lake are several picturesque villages including Canillas de Aceituno, Alcaucin, Periana (with the old moorish sulphur baths of Baños de Vilo) and Riogordo. Close by, the villages of Comares, Competa and Benamargosa are charming and should also not be missed. During the summer various villages around the lake have their traditional fiestas. The Torcal natural area close to Antequera, with its impressive rock formation, is also worth a visit.
The Tejada national park at the foot of Mount Maroma has an abundance of flora and fauna and is accessible from Alcaucin and Canillas de Aceituno. There are plenty of walking trails all around, some starting right next to the villa.
There are numerous restaurants in the area, most of them good value, and two of them are within walking distance. For supplies, there is an excellent modern shopping centre less than 15 minutes drive away where you'll find everything you might need (and a water park, should the kids get tired of the pool!) For essentials, there is a small supermarket in the white village of Los Romanes above the villa.

"Peace, tranquility and stunning views at La Maroma"
We stayed at La Maroma during the last week of September and had an amazing time. The villa was spotlessly clean on arrival and had everything we could possibly need plus so much more. Our intention was to have a week of complete relaxation by the pool with minimal cooking and washing up and that is exactly what we had!
The large kitchen was very well equipped with plenty of crockery, cutlery, glasses and pots & pans which meant no washing up in between dishwasher loads. We used the BBQ to prepare a couple of meals and ate al fresco every night by candlelight at the large table on the terrace. This was an amazing experience - the lake and mountains went through so many colour changes as night fell and the lights from the villages on the mountain side seemed to twinkle - so pretty!
The tastefully decorated rooms were all generously sized and had ample furniture and storage space. There was a large dining table and chairs in the lounge area plus plenty of board games, packs of cards, dart board and free wifi etc but, to be honest, the only time we went indoors was to get another drink, shower or sleep. With the view of the pool, lake and mountains being so breathtaking we didn't want to waste a second of it. The kitchen had a large fridge freezer so plenty of room to chill the beer and local wine (see * below). The utility room had a washing machine and clothes airer, and there was a washing line outside so we were able to wash and dry clothes easily. All windows were fitted with insect screens which meant the windows could be left open at night without worrying about mosquitos etc and roller shutters so the rooms could be kept cool in the daytime.
Pool and surrounding area
There was adequate room around the pool for sunbathing with plenty of sun chairs and loungers. The pool was easily accessed via the Roman steps and was the perfect size for a refreshing dip. When we weren't sat on the terrace gazing at the lake and mountain we were in or around the pool. The gazebo near the pool provided welcome shade and comfy seating in the heat of the day and there were plenty of other seating areas with tables and chairs on various terraces around the villa. The villa is surrounded with established plants and olive trees so is not overlooked.
Out and about
The surrounding area is beautiful and we took a drive around the mountain villages on our last day, which, unfortunately, was rather overcast. The Mercadona at Torre del Mar, a 20 minute drive away, catered for all our food and drink needs with very reasonable prices. I can recommend the *Don Simon vino blanco, which tasted remarkably like Pinot Grigio but at €1.29 for a 1 litre carton was only a fraction of the price! There is a Lidl close to the Mercadona but we didn't shop there so can't comment on the stock or prices.
Meet and greet
On arrival we were met at the Los Romanes turn-off by Ian who showed us the route to the villa. Ian also kept the pool clean and, as he had a wealth of local knowledge, gave us info on shops and facilities in neighbouring villages. Oh, and provided tips on how to negotiate the villa driveway!! Thanks Ian.
We made the mistake of hiring a car from Gold Car – NEVER again! What a rip-off AND we had to queue for 2 hours at the airport (Malaga) to collect our pre-booked car! We should have spoken to Ian before booking as he could have recommended a local company and saved us the 2 hour wait (and probably some Euros)! When we return next year we will most certainly be doing that.
If you want a relaxing holiday in a beautiful villa surrounded by stunning views and peace and tranquility then look no further - La Maroma has it all. We will definitely be returning next year - for two weeks!
