The Andalucia / Malaga Province region
Located 45 minutes to the east of Malaga airport, inland away from the hustle and bustle of the coast. You can choose to explore inland to Granada with its fabulous architecture and gardens or the historic town below. Antequera, a busy market town of Roman origin with its historic bullring, a 13th century castle and a wealth of history is also worth a visit.
There is the Wolf Park, where you can see different breeds of wolf during the day, or how about a BBQ and Howling Night? There is skiing in the Sierra Nevada which is close to Granada, a water park 20 minutes away. At Easter there are processions throughout Spain, when the statues of Jesus and The Virgin Mary potraying the Bible story are carried through the streets. These processions are spectacular and take place every night during the week leading up to Good Friday when all the Brotherhoods and bands of the armed forces parade until the early hours of the morning. These can be seen in the historic town of Velez-Malaga which lies close by. There are also the Passion Plays performed at Rio Gordo every year which are famous throughout Spain.
Nerja on the coast is a lovely old town where the new year is celebrated with a fabulous firework display on the Balcon de Europa overlooking the sea. On the ourskirts of the town, towards Maro, are the caves where concerts are held every summer in the massive underground chamber; well worth a visit. There are many other places to visit, and don't forget the beach as well.
Situated around the lake are various BBQ areas where you can enjoy a long, leisurely lunch, or perhaps a short drive to La Maroma mountain, spend time walking, have a picnic or BBQ or even lunch at the restaurant. Wild Boar and Deer can be seen in this area.
There are two golf courses within 30 minutes drive.
The Lake Vinuela / Los Romanes area
There is a small shop next to the two restaurants nearby. Small supermarkets and a butchers shop are within ten minutes drive. There are various local weekly markets; the one in Torre del Mar, on Thursday, is usually quite good for buying quality shoes at bargain prices.
This area of Spain is suited to all year round holidays; normally sunshine can be guaranteed. The winters are fairly mild and rainfall is usually infrequent.

Hey Alan and Kristin Just wanted to say what an absolutely divine place you've got there. Truly stunning. We had a fabulous time and although have only been back a few days we're missing 'that view' and the way the colours on the mountain and reflections in the lake gave a constantly changing vista. Truly inspirational. We especially liked the way the villa was secluded and private and had absolutely everything possibly needed – and within a 20min walk you could be in the village and a 40min drive be on the beach. Even supermarket shopping wasn't too much of a strain as you'd know that 20mins later you'd be back in paradise, G&T in hand. Perfection. We took trips to the nearby villages – Comares is truly beautiful perched on a mountaintop - and we considered revisiting the Alhambra in Granada, but to be honest we didn't really want to leave Mimosa. You could also do a long day-trip to Cordoba if you felt sufficiently energetic. WIFI worked brilliantly also – I had to do a heap of work – and the handy plug by the pergola was a godsend as I could beaver away on the laptop and still stroll out by the pool into the sunshine between emails. We took walks around the lake as far as we could go. Saw terrapins and for a couple of days had our own chameleon by the upper BBQ area. Now they are weird creatures. And a soaring eagle which was wonderful to see. And 'Antonio' and his 400 sheep. Hilarious. In fact he was herding them early on our day of departure and it was surreal to have an alarm call of sheep-bells! Truly a sight to see and brilliant as they flattened down the grass and made easy paths to follow when we went out walking. Mitch was brilliant and kept the generously-sized pool sparkly with twice-weekly visits and handy tips on where to go and where to eat. And the villa was very clean and well laid out. Copious amounts of extra towels and bed linen were also handy. AirCon in every room was good for hot nights too. Would highly recommend this villa as it's private, but not remote, has everything you need for a good chill-out holiday and is very well maintained and run. Access road to the villa is a breeze and with Malaga airport just an hour away it's a very easy place to find. |
