Home description

We have been working and holidaying in Italy for over 20 years, and have always struggled with the perennial problem of finding somewhere that offered all the character, privacy, views and charm that we needed without being several kilometers up a steep 'white road' that was best traversed in a four by four with your eyes shut.

We found Ricerca dei Sogni (Dream Chaser) two years ago and immediately fell in love with it. We have spent the last two years completely renovating the property and adding a swimming pool. The current pictures do not I'm afraid, do it justice. We are hoping to have more professional photos available soon.

We have added every modern convenience, from double glazed windows to air conditioning, whilst maintaining as much of the original character and integrity of the property. It is really a house for all seasons; cool and tranquil in the heat of summer with open air dining and extended terraces and seating areas throughout the whole property, then warm and comforting in the winter with log burning stove at the heart of the living room.

The Umbria region

Umbria is one of Italy's smaller regions both in terms of size and population. It is located almost exactly in the middle of the country. It is perhaps most famous for its inland lake, Lago di Trasimeno, the largest inland stretch of water south of the 5 great lakes in the North.

Over the past ten years it has started to rival its more famous neighbhour Tuscany as more people become aware of its particular charm and mix of cultural and geographical features. Due to its central location, it offers a perfect starting point for those wishing to explore a wide area and yet maintain a base to return to each day.

Lake Trasimeno / Fontignano area

Fontignano is famous for its association with Perugino, who was the most celebrated of the Renaissance painters from the area, and the village houses his last resting place and frescos in the local church. The local supermarket, post office, bank, hairdressers and pasitcerria offer everything that you should need fo your holidaywithout having to drive. The local bar is very much the heart of the village, and Alvaro and Julianna always have a warm welcome for any new guests. The kids in particular seem to enjoy the independence of wandering down to the bar for a gelato and a game of pool.

The local market in Tavernelle (5 minutes drive) is on a Monday, and during the summer season Tavernelle also opens it open air lido with swimming pools, flume tubes and other delights for the whole family. Panicale and Paciano are absolutely delightful and relatively unknown treasures. In particular the main square in Panicale is a treat for the eyes. Pop into Sylvana's bar (listed as one the top 1,000 bars in Italy) and say "hi" to Sylvana from Chris and Rosemary. You will be assured of a warm welcome.

All the delights of Umbria and Tuscany are within a 90 minute radius, from Florence in the north, Sienna in the west, Orvietto in the south and Perugia/Assisi in the east. You can also reach both coasts and Rome within 2 hours.

During the summer months there are numerous jazz and historic festivals in many of the towns and villages surrounding Lake Trasimeno, culminating in the world famous Perugia Jazz festival which features. The Lake itself offers a host of delights from fishing, swimming, sun bathing and boating during the day, to fine dining and lively discotheques at night. All within 20 minutes from the house.

How to get there

Airports - Perugia (40 minutes), Florence (90 minutes), Rome (2 1/2 hours), Pisa (2 hours).
Car Hire - We always use ebookers.co.uk
The house is a pleasant 10 minute walk from a village that has all basic amenities and a small supermarket. It is possible to do without a car if all you want to do is chill out at the house for a week (train to Chiusi or Perugia, then bus or taxi to Fontignano), but we would always advise the use of a car.
The house is approximately 30 minutes drive from the main Auto del Sole motorway.
Trains - Chiusi (30 minutes), Castiglione del Lago (25 minutes), Perugia (30 minutes).

Further details outdoors:
The property consists of about 2 acres of garden, mostly given to olive trees (we produce our own olive oil and wine) with a couple of old small outhouses, one of which now contains the air conditioning plant. It is very private and secluded, at the end of its own short white road, only 250 metres from the village of Fontignano (bank, post office, bar, supermarket, hairdressers, pasticerria) on the southern side of Lake Trasimeno.

There are three terraced areas adjoining the house; one covered leading directly off the kitchen, which we use for dining and enjoying the shade; another directly along the front of the house and a third leading from the master bedroom. There is also a cleared area at the back of the house among the olive trees.

The pool has its own sunlounge area, and sits close to the house.

The olive trees are a delightful retreat during the heat of the summer. In less than a couple of minutes you can be out of view of the house and secluded in your own patch of olive trees. An idyllic location for painting and reading.

Conditions

The property is an old farm that has been renovated to enable its guests to enjoy 21st Century standards of comfort whilst striving hard to keep its "rough edges". It can be a great place of adventure for children.

Thanks for a great week.

Very peaceful. The Italian lessons were a great idea, and Tara was brilliant.

Just a quick line to say thank you. The reception from Tara was just wonderful. The GPS system was really useful, and we have added a couple more restaurants!!
