The Umbria region
Umbria, for many people known as "green heart" of Italy is a small region with a powerful spirit in central Italy. In spring time, wildflowers transform the rolling Umbrian countryside into a rainbow of colour.Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of the region are planty of fortified medieval hill towns rich in art, history and architecture, and many are relatively untouched by tourism. Gubbio, Spello, Todi, Spoleto, Deruta, Orvieto — all are unique and worthy of a visit. Perugia, the capital, is one of Italy’s best preserved towns, with a strong artistic and cultural tradition.
The Umbrian landscape is often cloaked in a silver blue haze, giving it a soft, soothing, and almost mystical quality. Western monasticism began in the Umbrian hills, and abbeys, monasteries and convents are found throughout the region. Several Christian saints were born here, the most famous being St Francis, who preached in the cobblestone streets of Assisi and prayed in the surrounding hills and fields, which today remain much as they were seven hundred years ago. Olive oil flavors most of the dishes of this hilly region, and ventresca and guanciale, cured meats, also lend their distinctive taste. Black truffles from Norcia and Spoleto feature in specialties like spaghetti alla norcina. Meat is usually grilled, roasted, or baked; try the roasted lamb, agnello arrosto, traditional at Easter.
Lake Trasimeno / Magione area
Lake Trasimeno ( 128 square kilometres) situated in central italy is the fourth largest lake of the country. It is surrounded by important historic centres, olive groves and vineyards. There are important towns, encircled by medieval walls, preserving the typical look of the medieval fortified village. The lake and its surroundingd rapresent a haven for a wide variety of birds and acquatic species. The economy of the area depends on tourism and agriculture. There are three main islands: Polvese (the bigger one), Isola Maggiore e Isola Minore connected by ferry with main towns.
Trasimeno Lake location is excellent as the surrounding area is directly linked to some of the most delightful places in Italy: Perugia (40' ), Assisi (50' ), Siena (60' ), Arezzo (45' ), Cortona (20' ), Florence (70' ), Pisa (1 ¾ hrs) and Rome (2 ½ hrs).
