Home description

This very characteristic 17th-century complex, called "Molinella" is surrounded by oak woods, near a stream, in a private, quiet and peaceful location. On an 130-hectare organic olive -oil producing estate, on the hills surrounding Lake Trasimeno, with about 3.000 ancient olive trees and 60 hectares of woods, Romantic and secluded, yet close to shops and supermarkets (and a few very good restaurants!), it is an excellent starting point for visiting Umbria and nearby Tuscany.
There are a total of three houses, grouped together as if to form a small hamlet. “Il Casale” is the largest of the three. This typical and beautifully restored 3-bedroom farmhouse is ideal for a family: a private terrace, a swimming pool overlooking the woods, many trails within the property and in the area for great walks and mountain biking, and many characteristic hill towns and exciting castles to explore.

The Umbria region

Umbria, known as ‘the green heart of Italy’ is just east of Tuscany, north of Rome and west of the Marches. Crossed by the Apennines, a large part of the region is mountainous or hilly and characterised by charming rural landscapes, beautiful historic towns, old farmhouses (“casali”), green hills, ancient olive trees and oak woods. It is famous for its extra virgin olive oil and wine production. There are important historical towns such as Perugia, the region's capital, Gubbio, Assisi and Todi, besides a profusion of medieval villages, castles and monasteries. It is also well-known for international cultural events such as the Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi and the Umbria Jazz Festival, both held in the summertime.

Lake Trasimeno / Tavernelle di Panicale area

Apart from walking or mountain biking through the many beautiful country trails within our 130-hectare property and in the area, from Colle San Paolo you can visit important historic towns such as Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Cortona and Pienza and smaller, but equally interesting hamlets such as Panicale and Città della Pieve, or the small pictoresque towns on the shore of Lake Trasimeno. Fun activities include exploring the islands of Lake Trasimeno, visiting the lake’s bird and nature reserve, canoeing around the Polvese island, or trekking with donkeys in the woods of Panicale, visiting an ancient glass factory now musem, or the yummy "Baci Perugina"-producing chocolate factory.
The elegant (and very hot!) thermal baths of S. Casciano dei Bagni are certainly worth a visit, as are the castles of Mongiovino and S. Apollinare. Upon booking, we will send you our list of suggestions on interesting places to visit and activities (also for children) and of our favourite restaurants. Throughout the year there are many fun local fairs, village feasts and cultural events such as the "Trasimeno Blues" music Festival for example, or the chocolate festival "Eurochocolate", in Perugia. In November you are welcome to participate in the olive picking at our estate!
