The New England / New Hampshire region
Known as the Upper Valley, from the Connecticut River which forms the border between New Hampshire and Vermont, the countryside comprises gently rolling, wooded hills with many lakes. It is very much the land of outdoor pursuits from hiking to canoeing to riding. The area contains some of New England's prettiest villages. The house is half way between New London (12 miles) and Hanover (15 miles) home of the famous Ivy League Dartmouth College. Further away (25 miles) is the historic Woodstock with its beautifully preserved 1820s homes.
The summers can be very warm, high 20sC. (The house has ceiling fans) The warmth goes on until late September. We have swum in the lake on 1st October. Fall is sudden, quite short (2 weeks) but stunning. Then clear, cold days, but the golf goes on until the snow starts in late November.
Lake Eastman area
Eastman is private residential estate of 4000 acres centred on a lake which is about 3 miles by 1 mile. The house has its own lake front and is about 300 yards from one of the (five) sandy beaches, suitable for children. The environmental rules on the estate are stringent which means that the lake is very clean for swimming.
The estate has its own golf course and 12 tennis courts. In the winter the estate is groomed for XC skiing. In the summer the Activity Shack is open for boat/canoe hire and swimming competitions, drawing classes camp outs etc. etc. for children. For range of activities and costs, look at www.eastmannh.com .
How to get there
Lake Eastman is easily reached from Boston's Logan Airport. The distance is 110 miles and takes 2 hours. Take R93 North, switch to R89 and then take Exit 13. The entrance to the Eastman estate is 500 yards from this exit.
