The Scottish Highlands region
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the rugged landscapes of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. The beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway is littered with fortresses and strongholds, testimony to its dramatic history. Moving north, the Highlands are to Scotland what the Pyrenees are to France, with equally breathtaking scenery and fantastic opportunities for walking and mountaineering. Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are particularly famous for skiing, whilst Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain at 1343m, is a firm favourite for those seeking a challenge.
For the less energetic, the Whisky Trail provides a unique way of exploring many of Scotland’s attractions and for quieter moments, there’s always Loch Ness and a chance to spot the elusive monster! Scotland also has some of Britain’s best and cleanest beaches. Cromarty is famous for its bottle-nosed dolphins and Nairn, whilst claiming to be one of the sunniest and driest places in the country, has glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam. Several islands lie off the Scottish coast, each with their own character and heritage, however the Isle of Skye is probably the best known and most visited. As the largest of the Inner Hebrides, Skye’s turbulent geological past has bequeathed it a stunning coastline.
Experienced walkers are drawn to the Black Cuillin Mountains, whilst those less experienced have an array of lower level coastal walks from which to choose or alternatively, visitors can take some time to visit Skye’s capital, the charming harbour town of Portree.
The Lairg area
Its beginnings can be traced back to the Neolithic period, where evidence of a thriving community can still be seen on the slopes of Ord Hill. There is a popular path winding up the hill, passing burial cairns, hut circles, burnt mounds, ancient banks, field clearance heaps and other fascinating features from the past. The short trail is well worth the climb to enjoy the magnificent view of the stunning scenery. The region is served by a number of other fascinating attractions, such as the North West Highlands Geo Park and the world-famous Glenmorangie Distillery. For those interested in the culture and history of the region, there is an abundance of heritage sites to visit, such as the nearby Brora Heritage Centre.

Guestbook for 1170 - Oak
Fantastic cottage, fantastic location and great fishing too. The caretaker could not have been more helpful and friendly.

,The property was excellent in every way, from the setting looking across the loch to the overall decor and cleanliness, the best cottage I have ever been too. Would not change anything about it.
Mrs Wood, Wirral, Merseyside

,This was the second time at the cottage this year for my wife's birthday. Like the first time it was magic, you just can't fault the place or surroundings. We found a place selling game/shellfish just along the road and had wild boar sausages, venison and smoked salmon. It's a 'home from home'.
Mr Galloway, Cowdenbeath, Fife

,The house was lovely and clean, and the lady who looks after the place was very helpful and friendly. There was a lovely view across the Loch.
