This medieval solid stone barn has been lovingly and expertly converted to a beautiful home with a fusion of rustic and modern styles, with some gorgeous design features and original artworks. Furniture is mainly modern, with some antique features. It is both practical and comfortable. There is constant hot and cold running water which comes from a local spring and tastes delicious.

The inside is normally cool in summer, while it is normally lovely and warm outside.

You can spend your holiday here relaxing in peace and tranquillity, on the edge of a tiny hamlet surrounded by vineyards, with the foothills of the Pyrenees nearby. A few tractors and cars may pass by each day, but normally, the only sound you'll hear will be the wide range of birds which fly around.

It is a space that feels good, inside and out. Inside, it is surprisingly comfortably spacious, with an open plan design except for the bathroom. Outside, there is a terrace at the back overlooking the vineyards and mountains where you can eat, drink or just relax.

There are plenty of places to visit and things to do in the area and lots of very rewarding walks in and around the village.

As you would expect, the local food and wine are excellent, both to have at home and to eat out.

This accommodation is not suitable for toddlers or children, particularly if they like climbing!

About this location

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

This area is similar in appearance to the Peak District in England, but with much better weather, hence the wine production! There are many Cathar Castles to visit, and the nearest City is Carcassonne, famous for its castle as well as the quaint medieval city. There are museums and galleries there, and large modern shops, elegant squares, and canal boat rides. You can play golf there.

While Caunettes is in the beautiful foothills of the Pyrenees, it is less than 1 hour from the coast, with a choice of beaches to visit for swimming, sunbathing, and, when the weather is right, windsurfing. Some beaches are wide, long and sandy, and others more shingly. The resorts are surprisingly quiet, without the commercialisation of other parts of the Mediterranean!

The area, as a whole, is very charming, truly French, and generally under-commercialised.

Narbonne, Montpellier, Perpignan and even Barcelona are accessible by car, and, if you like cities, well worth a visit.

For people who like wine, many producers give the opportunity to "try before you buy", or "degustation vente", though you may find your favourite wine is made by Sandrine in Caunettes itself!

Caunettes-en-Val is a tiny hamlet in which the old houses are made of stone, and are very old, including The Barn. Caunettes is right in the middle of the beautiful vineyards of Languedoc, with plenty of good wine! Caunettes is too small to show on this map above, though we can send you a good map, and it is on sat nav and google maps!

Fresh bread and cakes are delivered to the village every day but Wednesday. Fresh honey is carefully produced in the village by honey artisan Alban. When removing the honey from the honeycombs, he is careful not to heat it over 40 degrees, so all the best qualities of the natural product are retained. He has different flavours, collected from different terrains in the area. When he is not selling his honey in local markets, or collecting it from his hives, Alban may be happy to show you round his new modern premises in the village.

There are many places to walk in and around the area, including a sculpture trail in the hills just outside the next village, Mayronnes.

The area is popular with keen cyclists.

Lagrasse is a very special small town, only 10-15 minutes away by car, with beautiful narrow medieval streets and abbey, a Roman bridge over the river, a "river beach" where you can sunbathe and swim, and plenty of excellent restaurants, bars, bakeries and cafes.

Guests are happy to visit Lagrasse, then get back easily to the quietness and simplicity of Caunettes.

There is another "river beach" in nearby Ribaute which is popular for swimming and even diving, for the brave!

There are often live entertainments around the area - too many to mention here, including, at various times, classical, jazz, folk, latino, country, blues and rock music for those who wish! These are often outdoors and often free, with the option to buy food and drinks.

There are several markets in the area where you can buy fresh local produce, organic if you wish. You may also be interested in the local bric-a-brac or antique sales.
