About the home

Beautifully renovated three bedroom house with an open kitchen, a dining area, a mezzanine with a large living room area. There is also a terrace (roof level- lots of privacy) with a table and chairs where you can sit and enjoy a a BBQ with a glass of wine while admiring the great view of the vineyards on one side and the Corbieres on the other. Enjoy the cafe/restaurant for a great lunch or dinner, there is also a store which is open on Sundays. You can buy your fresh croissants, pain au chocolat or fresh bread every day.
The region’s climate - with its combination of wind and sun - makes Languedoc-Roussillon one of the best places in Europe for sailing and windsurfing/kitesurfing. Uncrowded, wide, sandy beaches are only 35 minutes away from the house. The Orbieu river, which runs through the village, is popular with fishermen and is ideal for swimming, paddling or just sunbathing on the rocks.
Wine tasting in Languedoc Roussillon, South France is boundless - as Languedoc is the world's largest wine-producing region, and has, as you'd expect, hundreds of wine domaines offering wine-tasting!
The house is located in the midst of the Corbières vineyards, famous for their wines. It is easily accessible, only 30 min from Carcassonne airport and 15 minutes from the A61 autoroute.
Ribaute has its own shop, cafe and restaurant where you can buy fresh bread and croissants everyday. and a post office In Fabrezan there is a bakery, pharmacy, 2 grocery stores, 3 café/bars/restaurants with food available, a tabac, a post office, a pharmacy, a whole/health food shop and two excellent restaurants. There is large Intermarcher supermarket at 7 minutes’ drive from Fabrezan (in Lezignan).
Lagrasse (3 km from Ribaute) is an 11th century village with cobbled streets and an amazing Abbey. The village was voted "one of the most beautiful villages in France". It has two epiceries and five really good restaurants, a lively bar/cafe serving good and simple food, a garage and petrol pump. It has potters market, an organic and local produce market on Saturdays.
If you have children there's an African Reserve (Zoo) in Sigean, and four water parks, and aquariums nearby: http://www.infoparks.com.
A high chair, a travel cot as well as a baby rocking chair (and a few toys!) available for our guests traveling with babies.There is a small part with swings and slides in the village. There is a large indoor/outdoor pool open 7 days a week/365 days a year in Narbonne and it is fantastic ; loads of slides and warm pools (ideal if it rains!).
The historic cities of Narbonne and Carcassonne may both be reached in half an hour. Cathar castles, medieval abbeys and picturesque villages are all near. If you play golf, you will be satisfy with top-quality character courses for experienced players as well as beginners.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

This part of Southern France attracts artists and photographers, with its colourful landscape which changes dramatically through the seasons.Ribaute is a great centre for exploring local history and architecture - Narbonne’s fine mediaeval buildings and Roman beginnings; Phoenician Agde; the great mediaeval walled Cité of Carcassonne; Cistercian Abbeys; Cathar Castles from the Albigensian crusades of the early 13th century on hilltops everywhere; fortified cathedrals at Beziers and Capestang; - and the exciting southern cities of Toulouse, Montpellier, Perpignan and Albi - all these are within easy reach.

The Lagrasse area

Halfway between Narbonne and Carcassonne, take the road from Lezignan to Fabrezan (where photography was invented - see museum).Continue past vineyards, and climb past Camplong with its potent red wines (buy some!) , under the gaze of Mount Alaric. Then onto Ribaute with its hidden chateau, following the winding road above the river Orbieu (good for swimming and cooling off in the heat of Summer) until at last you reach a superb viewpoint overlooking the idyllic village of Lagrasse. The village is famed for its Abbey, Medieval houses and streets, book and pottery fairs over the Summer months, and a lovely 12th century hump backed bridge. It is good place to explore anytime of the year and has a number of good restaurants. The town has become a haven for potters and artists and many of the attractive medieval houses (some dating back to the 14th century) have been converted into studios and exhibition spaces. In the centre of the town, the cobbled market square with its covered central section plays host to craft fairs, bric-a-brac sales, and produce markets during the summer; for the last few years there has also been a literary festival of a somewhat philosophical bent (Le Banquet du Livre) at the abbey during August. The broad main boulevard, shaded by the inevitable (but beautiful) plane trees, offers ample opportunities for dining al fresco, or the classic French holiday activity of sitting in a café watching the world go by.
Ribaute: You could stop off to view the waterfalls in the river at Ribaute, dammed by the local council to provide a pleasant spot for swimming, fishing and picnicking. A narrow stone bridge hangs over the deeply incised gorge; looking at the 8-metre drop in summer it is hard to believe that the winter floods rushing down from the high Corbières can bring the water foaming up to the parapet.
Fabrezan has another popular place for swimming; broader and shallower than the river at Ribaute, with a stony but shaded beach, it is a safer bet for those with young children. It can get crowded on summer afternoons though. The village itself is very attractive with a broad, shady main street, a couple of good restaurants, a café, and all the usual shops, plus a museum dedicated to Charles Cros, poet and inventor of the phonograph; the local winery takes its name from him. In August there is a '1900 weekend' recreating Fabrezan during the Belle Epoque with street stalls, demonstrations of crafts such as blacksmithing and lacemaking, and dancing in the streets during the evening.

“beautiful old renovated house in a small town on the river for a swim in the vineyards” We rested in August - a family with 4 children. Beautiful house with three separate bedrooms, 100 meters from the river with large pools of warm water in August, where you can swim, sunbathe, jump into the water. Apartment in an old house with its own platform on the roof. newly renovated, 3 levels, clean cleaned and were ready for our arrival. Living room and 3 bedrooms, large loft where the children loved to gather to play board games (games in the house) while adults relax in the evenings. House for a relaxing holiday with the kids or active travel in the surroundings! Sea and beaches in 30 minutes. ride. Around the vineyards, peace and quiet! Nearby is a farm with horses, many small wine chateau. The car park is better near the main street at the office of the Post. Very comfortable communication with the owner when renting an apartment in an e-mail. Ability to book a house with arrival / departure at convenient days of the week! Roman, Russia

Back in Paris. Yes, Yes, Susan and I really liked the house in Ribaute! You guys did a terrific renovation, we really liked the layout especially the top floor. We spent a lot of hours hanging out and cooking fun meals. The town is nice also. We were much happier than we could have been in Lagrasse as there were too many people there this year. Believe me we didn't want to leave when the 2 weeks were up, we felt sad to walk down the stairs that last time but happy to know we will stay there again another summer, next time for more weeks.
Thanks to you and Neal and congratulations that you made such a comfortable and beautiful space.

I had meant to write to you but haven't had a spare moment since we got back.

We had a lovely holiday thanks. Your house was lovely and absolutely perfect for what we wanted. The photos don't do it justice. The lounge and roof terrace were lovely. The weather was really good all week so we spent an awful lot of time on the terrace. The village was also really beautiful with the river running through it. We also spent a lot of time in Lagrasse. We drove to Toulouse for the day and really liked it there, very lively little city.

All in all a fantastic holiday. We'd highly recommend your house to friends.

Thanks Celine. We did have good weather and saw how beautiful the Ribaute location really was. Also, the house was so comfortable to come back to and relax after a day's sightseeing. Just wanted to say we had a fabulous time staying in your lovely house - it was amazing value for money with so much space. We have often driven through villages in the south of France and wondered what the very old houses looked like on the inside - yours was unbelievable, I could not believe how much space there was and how sympathetically it had been renovated. Because of the wonderful weather we didn't make use of your wonderful sitting room as we spent so much time on the roof terrace which was an added bonus. We had breakfast outside every morning looking over the mountains and although we didn't eat in every night, we always sat on the terrace until it was time for bed. We loved going down to the river after we had been out all day and sitting on the rocks with a good book - the girls loved the fact that the water was deep enough to swim. Having two showers was a godsend with two teenage girls in the house!!
Not sure what holidays will entail in the future as Charlotte is off to University next year but if we ever thought about the region around Ribaute again, we would certainly have no hesitation in staying in your house again.

We were going to write to you to say a great big thanks for a splendid week. The house is so much more than a gite, we felt right at home. Without a doubt the best place we have ever stayed in.
Getting the boys out of the river was the hardest part. We couldn't agree on the names of the birds wheeling over the roof every evening
I'm guessing swifts and house-martins. Am I right ?

Our top tips, in case anyone asks (in no particular order):

- Carcassonne, especially the medieval tournament
- Peyrepertuse
- Rafting up near Prades
- Restaurant "Calicot" in Fabrezan

enjoyed exploring it further. The house is beautiful - we think we

Just a note to say how much we enjoyed our stay in Ribaute. Your house is lovely, spacious and spotlessley clean. We especially liked the roof terrace with views over the village (The pictures on this site don't do it justice!). We loved the village and went swimming in the river nearly every day. Dear Celine,
The house was absolutely wonderful, I wouldn't change a thing. We loved Ribaute and got to know Lagrasse
and Fabrezan, had a quite good celebratory diner at Calicot the last evening. Loved the wildflowers and
house martins, walked a lot and checked out the gardens, greenhouses and vineyards. Watched the boys
jumping off the bridge into the Orbieu.
I'll recommend it and hope to go back sometime.

Just a catch up to say we had a really great holiday in Ribaute last week. The house was just perfect., the sun shone and the wine was good - what more could we have asked!
The conversion you have done on the house is just amazing - the light coming right down from the roof terrace is so good and the breeze blowing through the lounge is just right. We liked the african drummers painting - and all the other little african pieces also.
We hope to be in touch again as we don't think that is out last visit to Ribaute.
