About the home

The immaculately presented, split-level, open plan design of this villa is ideal for entertaining. Steps lead up from the sitting room to the double-height kitchen and dining area with a timber staircase up to the mezzanine level. This level opens onto a sheltered upper terrace with views over the village and surrounding countryside. There are two bedrooms either side of the living area which makes this villa ideal for 2 families sharing as well as one family wanting that extra space. Outside a screened terrace surrounds a large, heated swimming pool with solar heated poolside shower and electrically operated pool cover - a good 'child friendly' option.

The villa is set in the award-winning, landscaped village of AlmaVerde - a collection of privately owned, traditionally built property in the rural surrounds of the protected Costa Vincentina National Park. All guests have access to tennis courts and a children's playground which are both within walking distance of each villa. Guests also have access to a Day Spa, offering a range of beauty treatments and therapies, located in one of the villas near the playground.

Coolhouse System:
This system is designed to reduce the average daytime summer temperatures to a cooler internal temperature throughout the building. It is not a conventional air-conditioning system (where you would have air con units on the walls) but a cooling system that is built into the entire villa - vents at the top and bottom of walls circulate the air. N.B. Whilst the advert lists air conditioning please note that this refers to the Coolhouse system which is the 'eco-friendly' alternative. The Algarve / West Algarve region

The Lagos / Burgau area

Lagos (pronounced "lah-gosh") is one of the Algarve's most attractive and historic towns, capturing the imagination with its carefree holiday spirit, laid-back lifestyle and immense historical wealth. With its cobbled streets and colourful Marina, Lagos has some excellent restaurants, good shops and great nightlife plus a range of family activities and superb beaches on the doorstep.

10 minutes west of Lagos is Burgau, a picturesque fishing Village with pretty white cottages, jumble of drawn up fishing boats and a sheltered sandy beach with lively beach bar. A handful of restaurants and mini-market serve the village and those looking for a more local lifestyle.

AlmaVerde is found 4km inland from Burgau, 55 minutes from Faro and 10 minutes from Lagos. This award winning village comprises a selection of newly built, luxurious yet tradtiional looking Villas with access to a day spa, tennis courts and countryside as far as the eye can see.

Beaches:
The nearest beach is Burgau with the sandy beaches of Salema, Zavial, Figueira, Sagres and Martinhal all within a 5 - 15 minute drive West. To the East are the beaches of Luz, Porto de Mos, Lagos and many more within 10 minutes.

Golf:
Only 10 minutes either East or West are two golf courses - Parque da Floresta and Boa Vista. Slightly further afoot are a range of golf courses, many of which are championship level - the famous Penina, Quinta do Lago and Vale da Lobo (Golden Triangle) courses are within a 45 minute drive.

The best airport to fly to is Faro which is only a 50-55 minute drive to AlmaVerde - straight down the main A22 motorway. N.B. As of December 2012 there is now a toll charge applicable for those using the A22 but you don't pass through any toll booths. Instead the government ask that you pay (within 5 days of your travel) at a local pay station. Please check these details with your car hire company as they may have built this detail into your rental package - they will also be able to advise you on how to pay, etc.

Lisbon airport is about a 2.5 hour drive and nearly all motorway driving so a good alternative. It is a good idea to have some Euros with you as there are toll roads along the way and you'll be able to pass through these quickly if you have change rather than notes.

Airlines such as TAP Portugal, Monarch, EasyJet and BA all fly into both airports and it's a good idea to shop around as there is nearly always a good deal to be found. Sometimes the price you see when you first do your search doesn't include the extras for baggage, choosing your seat, speedy boarding, etc, etc which can suddenly change a cheap ticket into something a little more expensive. Also watch out for the weight restrictions on baggage which can change with some airlines all the time - their website will list what the current restrictions are. Finally there are sometimes tick boxes which ask whether you want 1 bag (plus 1 piece of hand luggage) per person and it's a good idea to check your confirmation to make sure you can take enough bags - saving any frantic repacking if you've unknowingly booked 1 main piece of luggage for the whole family!

There are a lot of car hire companies in Portugal and sometimes your airline will offer you a discount if you use their partner company - have a look on their website once you have booked your flights. I have used a local Lagos company for many years who, for me, have always been very reliable and they will offer anyone booking through me an all-inclusive, discounted, deal - they include unlimited drivers, children's seats and zero-excess in their policy with this deal. If you'd like to speak to them please let me know and I'll send you on the email. They can also offer a transfer service from the airport to the villa (and back) which is really useful for people who aren't confident about motorway driving. Given the position of AlmaVerde I would recommend a car for local journeys so if you've had a transfer from the airport they can also arrange to drop off a car to you at the villa. They don't service any arrivals from Lisbon unfortunately and I don't know anyone to recommend other than the normal companies like Hertz - leave plenty of time to pick up your car though as it can take quite a long time to get through the queues in Lisbon.

AlmaVerde is located just off the EN125 at the turn off to Burgau. Directions and access details for the villa are sent to you when you've paid your final balance but if you'd like to know an exact location please do let me know and I can give you some coordinates. Some searches (for example Google Earth) aren't completely up to date so the images may date back to 2006/2007 when there weren't very many villas built.
